Dumb question on installing OS on hyperV

Okay I have created a virtual drive, switch and then created a new virtual machine.

I have downloaded a windows 98 iso (legally, I have a disk but its badly scratched).

I'm trying to install win98 on the VM but not sure how. I had the option when I was playing around with the first time and chose install later.

I deleted the VM and drive, created new ones but didn't get the option to install an OS.

If I start the vm I just get boot failure. I have mounted the win 98 iso in the virtual cd drive but nothing's happening!

I'm pretty sure this is something obvious but I'm new at all this vm stuff..

Can you boot the ISO by itself?
If no i think you need the MS-DOS Boot Disk in either .vfd or .img format, , but i'm clueless in mounting floppy drive images in Hyper-V and Windows Virtual PC.

Thanks Kari, as it happened I had done exactly what was in the instructions.

I think it could be the ms dos boot disk. I have downloaded it in exe format so going to try that! Can't get on the PC until tomorrow now but will report back if it works!

    Hi there
I'd start with VMware before using HYPER-V if you aren't experienced with Virtual Machines --nothing against HYPER-V but using the Wizards to create VM's with VMware seems much easier IMO if you are a beginner. Use HYPER-V once you feel a bit more confident with building VM's.

To use VMWARE PLAYER (Free) you need to uninstall HYPER-V (Control panel - Programs and features) first.

To go back to HYPER-V you have to UNINSTALL the vmware product - then re-install Hyper-V. It's straightforward and only takes about half a minute.

i have got it setup easily enough. installed windows 7 on one VM last night that im using to try out new software!

just waiting for the win 98 iso to download (its taking an age for some reason?), the only issue with win 98 might be the ms dos boot disk. i have an exe but have no idea, even after a LOT of googling, how to convert it to a VFD. it doesnt help being dyslexic and spending ages looking through tons of websites searching for VDF! done that too many times now..

anyone help with converting the exe??

and thanks again to the legend that is jimbo! much appreciated mate

it downloaded. laughed when it asked me if i wanted to enable large disk support, for disks over 512MB!!!!!!

its currently formatting my hard disk. starting to thin giving it 4GB was probably too much lol

It went through the installation process to the point where it ticked all the list off, copying system files etc
then i got this error. any ideas? i think its probably a dodgy ms dos boot vdf but this is all new to me!
