    VMware and CD/DVD reader

I installed Windows 8 in VMware. All USB devices are being recognized when started/attached - except the CD/DVD reader. Any tips on how to get the CD/DVD reader to show up.

    Hello Wolfgang.
What happened to VirtualBox? I assume you have this issue with usb 3.0 which is supported on VMware only atm.

More specific: is this Player 5 / Workstation 9 or something else you use?
From what I understand it's a usb connected CD/DVD we're talking about. Is it?

You can browse the VMWare forums for this because all sort of issues are discovered/explained there.
VMware Communities: Connecting to a cd drive or usb drive...

And if it's the case of usb 3.0 there might be some issues there:
VMware Communities: Serious USB 3.0 Issue on VMware Fusion 5
The best VM to test this is Windows 8 for the moment so you might find a fix for it.
Don't mind if you see something for Fusion, Workstation or Player because the fix may apply to all three.

    Good luck

Thanks for the input. I will study the links. I went away from vBox because I had a lot of problems with the networking. vBox was monopolizing the IP address and I had a terrible time connecting with Windows 7.

    Hi there
(I have a decent memory so I still remember your post about saying you've used about 50 OS'es in your lifetime).

However AGAIN this problem is so simple to solve I have to doubt your "Provenance" as a "Real I.T" guy.

The solution to this is SO SIMPLE that I can't believe here (@WHS) you are making a serious post. Just get into the VM settings.

    Screenshot enc.

    Cheers

    Could that be it?
In that case it will simplify things fast.

    @jimbo
I wouldn't expect the problem to be that easy or obvious, otherwise I'll had the screenshot coming as well...
I expect VMware supports a lot of devices but we are not sure ALL devices work properly.

I guess a small number of the devices doesn't show up on the list, hence I provided those links.

Luckily, I never had a bad-ass device so far and VMware detects all of them nicely.

I think WHS is more accustomed with VBox (I have a good memory as well) but VMware will be easy to understand.
I still hope the problem to get solved.

    Cheers

Well for starters I do not have any tabs on top of my screen. My top looks like this (Pic1)

But as far as I can see, the CD reader is connected (Pic2)

Jimbo, I have answered thousands of dumb questions on the forums. I think I am entitled to ask a dumb question from time to time.

Found the problem. The CD drive setting was pointing to the Virtual drive H and not to the physical drive D. Problem solved.
