    Hello there!

It would be helpful if you can post us the exact error message. I find VMware more stable and useful than Windows Virtual PC.

    Hi there
Forget Virtual PC -- even Ms aren't going with this one any more

On Windows 8 HOST use HYPER-V / VMWARE player or VBOX if you want FREE virtual machine software. My feel is still to take vmware at the present time.

You might not even have to re-create your Virtual Machine again as vmware can convert different VHD's (Virtual hard disks) into the format required for vmware.

HYPER-V looks good but could be trickier to get going - but with Ms in the frame this type of software will improve very rapidly now.

HYPER-V was designed for W8 from the start (and W2012 server) - but vmware player is probably the easiest to get up and running with quickly. Note you have to remove HYPER-V if you want to use either vmware / vbox (and reverse - remove vmware / vbox to use HYPER-V).

Vmware BTW will allow a 64 bit GUEST even on a 32 Bit HOST so you can boot W8 x-64 from an XP Host !!!! -- although on an XP host max memory for GUEST and HOST combined is 4GB. - Ensure the VT option is enabled in the BIOS if you want to do this though -- should be on by default all recent machines.

    Cheers

It appears that the OP has a copy of Virtual PC installed on his computer, and is trying to create an instance of Windows 8 within Virtual PC. I don't believe that is supported at all.

    Hi there
The whole purpose of Virtual machine software is to create a Virtual Machine within it whether it's Linux, XP or even W8.
In theory Virtual PC should allow a W8 vm to be created -- although Virtual PC hasn't been a "Mainstream" Ms product for years --so it's probably unlikely you could create ANY 64 Bit guest system on it anyway.

If the OP wants to create a Windows 8 VM he could use VMware's vmplayer (totally FREE and works well) or try using Hyper-V on the W8 system itself --a bit more complex to create a VM with Hyper-V so I'd go for VMware player.

    Cheers

I wish yo were right about this... but HP still has a disabled by default.
Luckily it's easy to enable (same on most machines).

Jimbo, the OP is on Windows 7, no Hyper-V option, if the op just want to give a look to a free Windows 8 CP or a enterprise 90 days trial, he can Install VMware Workstation 9.0, it's will run free for 30 days

    Hi there

VMware workstation (Paid product) is what I usually use -- but the FREE VMware player will probably be more than enough for the OP. Originally vmplayer could not CREATE VM's.

A few releases ago you had to fiddle around with QEMU or similar software to get vmplayer to create a VM -- now the current releases of vmplayer can CREATE VM's from scratch without needing QEMU or similar software.

( Old timers might remember how we used to do it :
Creating Virtual Machine(s) for VMware Player | Joe Vasquez

) not needed any more now.

    Something like this?
System unable to boot after performing Boot Block Recovery - ThinkCentre A62

If you're careful, you won't get into trouble with that.
Worst case scenario: replace the motherboard....
    No thanks.

If they deny virtualisation use and you are not allowed to turn it on even if the CPU is capable, then is bad.
And I'll be using a BIOS mod that enables all options (if available) in no time.

Example (older laptop I got) no VT options in BIOS:
    Acer Aspire 7720
    Intel core 2 duo T7500

    I used a modified bios from bios-mods: [Unlocked, CL50145A] Acer Aspire 7720G
and all went well + I can access VT and use Hyper-V or increase performance in VMware.
