    Cannot install vmware

I tried installing different versions of Vmware Workstations (7.1.3, 8.0.3) and I keep getting this error which appears in the instalation process. Does anyone also run into this or know what is causing the error ?

same thing happens with version 9

My guess is that VMware does not yet support installation on Windows 8.

Are you running 64bit windows? The latest VMware's require a 64bit os/cpu in order to install.
Version 8 or 9 should work fine. I use the latest VMware Player without problems. If nothing helps try to download the installer again.
I launched it form the desktop without problems. You also need to have proper admin rights (administrator account).

It looks like you chose "run" instead of "save." Try downloading the file to your download location, then run as administrator. I know for a fact that VMware Workstaion 8 and 9 work in Windows 8.

Could be lots of reasons. My personal choice is VMWare...but Hyper-V is getting better and better each and every release.

Biggest hurdle for most people with Hyper-V will be fact that Hyper-V client REQUIRES a processor that does SLAT (Second level address translation). VMWare doesn't require this. So, unless you got a corei3/i5/i7...Hyper-V won't install. I actually had to upgrade my trusty Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 at work because of this very problem to test and play with Hyper-V client.

And if you are like and spent the $200 or so for a VMWare Workstation license, you don't want to just toss it aside and not use it anymore.

Our entire work environment is VMWare vSphere...so staying consistent at the desktop level is important for me.

So, just a few reasons why somebody might elect to not use hyper-v.

    Yes, agreed.

    And to add something else:
For desktop usage on a single computer, VMware has more capabilities like sound support, drag 'n' drop and better paravirtualized graphics. Hyper-V would need a remote desktop connection in order to use/emulate a sound card and that's not convenient if you use one pc.

Do you have a .exe instead of a .msi package you can try?

The only inconvenience I've found is the initial setup. Once that's done, it's not a bother at all. You can just run "powershell Start-VM vm-name" then remote into the VM. Pretty quick. However, it is somewhat annoying that there's not native NAT with Hyper-V.
