Administrator Permission?

I'm about to do a standard upgrade to Windows 10. I wanted to copy the contents of the C drive to the D drive so if anything goes wrong, I'll still have the personal files that were on the C drive. But I got this error message:

You need to provide administrator permission to copy this file.

I AM the admin of this computer! I'm the only user! What do I do?

Any help with this will be very much appreciated. :)

1) Right click folder/file -> Properties -> Security tab -> Advanced button
2) Under Permissions tab, press the Add button
3) Select a principal
4) Type: Administrators
5) Press OK
6) Check everything possible for: Basic permissions (Full control, modify, etc..) -> OK -> OK -> OK
7) Lucky step #7, try to copy it.

Hope you lucked out on this

It may be easier to leave all of the permissions the same and use CMD line XCOPY.

It may be more efficient if you get an external drive and make a restore point on it through your control panel.

OK I see I forgot to tell you I'm on Windows 8.1.
I right clicked the file.
There's no "security tab."

That's strange... I'm on Windows 8.1 aswell. You right clicked file then you press properties, and in the new window there's a Security tab on top, yah?

IGNORE the video name and ONLY watch from 0:16 to 0:29. It shows you how to get to the Security tab

OK this time there was a SECURITY tab.
And there's even a PERMISSIONS tab!
But no ADD button. :(

I should mention that I have very poor eyesight, and I'm a "high functioning" autistic, (Asperger's). So I live in a world of Alice in Wonderland a lot of the time.

OH, I see... you left out a step. For an Asperger, that can derail the whole process! Aspergers are very literal... like a simple computer!

I clicked on "TO CHANGE PERMISSIONS, CLICK 'EDIT' ".
Then the ADD button appeared.

Next step:
Select a principal..... What does that mean? What is a principal?

Okay I apologize, I'll try to be more specific instead of keeping my words too general for you. Yet still follow my first post as a guideline for the majority of this tutorial. It has the main words for everything that is necessary.

The reason why you don't see the "Select a principal" is because you accidentally pressed the Edit button. If you look under the Edit button on the bottom, there's an Advanced button. Press that instead

I tried to copy some other files, and some copied and some got that same error. Originally I tried to copy everything from the C drive. And immediately I got the error. Then I tried to copy individual files, and got that same error message. I'd like to be able to copy ALL the files/folders/programs that are on the C drive. Wouldn't Macrium Reflect do this? An ISO? But the interface is so difficult to figure out that I just stopped trying. :(

Hmh darn. Not sure about that program you mentioned. If possible, try to get someone who can help you out with that 7 step process that I mentioned earlier. It should be guaranteed to work. It applies to files/folders and everything in folders.

I'm in a window called:
Advanced Security Settings for LocalDisk (C:)

I'm on step 2. of your instructions:
2) Under Permissions tab, press the Add button

There's no ADD button.

"Under" the Permissions tab, the only available button is:
CHANGE PERMISSIONS

If I click on EDIT, then the new window has an ADD button.
If I click ADVANCED, there's no ADD button but there's a list of "PRINCIPALS."

Okay I see what you did. You followed the steps correctly, yet unfortunately doing this process on the Hard Disk itself is a little risky. Double click on Local Disk (C։) and do this for each folder inside Local Disk (C։) one by one. Don't do the Windows folder though.

So for example, right click on Program Files and do that process on it. Do exactly what you did on (C։) for this folder. After following the process in my steps, you will be asked if you want to do this for all the files inside the folder, you say Yes to that.

OK, but I never got to the end of your step by step process. In step 2, do I go to EDIT or ADVANCED? Remember... EDIT leads me to a window with an ADD button... and ADVANCED leads me to a window with those "principals" but no ADD button.

What should I do?

I think it would really help if you could rewrite the steps with the new information in mind. :)

Sure thing, so inside the Local Disk (C։),
1) Look for the folder you want to copy, right click on it, press Properties
2) On top, press Security
3) In this window, press the Advanced button
4) This will open a new window. You should automatically be in the Permissions tab. Look down, and press the Add button.
5) A new window called "Permission Entry for [Your folder name]" will open. On top next to Principal, press: Select a principal
6) Type: Administrators
7) Press OK
8) You will now see the Permission Entry window again. Under "Basic permissions:" check everything that will let you check its box. When you press the check box for "Full control", that should automatically check all the boxes possible. (I believe that the only one that you cannot check will be "Special permissions". It's okay, don't worry about it, because I cannot check it either.)
9) Press OK
10) You will now see the "Advanced Security Settings for [Your folder name]" window again. Press OK
11) You will now see the "[Your folder name] Properties" window again. Press OK
12) Now try to copy your folder over. Hopefully that works bro!

Thanx! :) I'll go through the steps tomorrow I think.

But something else has come up. I saw a YouTube video that brought up problems with the Windows magnifier in Win 10!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElhNNnyJgYk

If the magnifier doesn't work properly in Win 10, I won't be able to use my computer! :(

This kind of thing happens to people with disabilities all the time. Firefox lost its ability to do caret browsing FOR YEARS! I can't use Windows 10 without the magnifier... and I can't pay for a third-party magnifier! And as far as I know, nothing with what I need even exists outside the the default Windows magnifier. I searched.

If I just download Win 10 to a thumb drive, without installing it until the Win 10 magnifier is fixed, will I be able to do the upgrade, (and then the clean install), for free, even though the deadline has passed?

This is why I tend to leave updated turned off. :(

Years ago, I hosted what was probably the only radio show on disability issues in the United States. (WBAI FM, in New York City)... When Windows first came out, way too many people told me they could no longer use their computers! And these days, updates and upgrades that lock people with disabilities out, are much more serious!

And forcing people with impaired abilities to work much harder at getting basic functionality for their computers is totally absurd. :(

You're a Windows Insider. Do you know anything about this magnifier problem? It's been my experience that asking companies to fix stuff like this almost never works.
