Changing my password, I'm confused and could use help

I have 8.1 installed. When I hibernate or sleep my laptop when I bring it back up I am asked for my Password as my ID is already shown. No problem. But when I shutdown the thing and then later turn it back on it comes up with my name and a message that says user name and password incorrect, try again and an OK box. When I hit enter I get the sign on boxes with the ID saying my first name, which is incorrect ID, and the password box is empty. I then enter my correct ID and password and everything is fine. So I would like to go and correct the stored ID and hopefully keep my stored password, although I don't know if it is the correct one. I've consulted the Microsoft help database and confused as to whether I'm mixed up with a laptop password and a Microsoft password. Can anyone straighten this out for me?
