Wont accept password on initial login until restart

    Hi,

I've just installed Win 8.1 update and created a local account. Everything was fine and then suddenly when I turn the computer on and go to login it says my password is invalid. I'm stuck at the login screen.
If I restart the computer it then accepts my password. This happens consistently every time.

What can I do to fix this please?

    Thanks.

    Hello Frog,

Did you set Windows to automatically sign in to this account at startup?

If so, then go through netplwiz again to make sure the correct password was entered. Afterwards, see if it still does this.

Thanks for the reply Brink and all of your informative posts here.

I haven't set Windows to automatically sign in, I actually want to be able to type a password on startup. The issue is that it will only accept the password after a restart and not a shut down (I think i doesn't work after a log off either).

I have a feeling this may have happened after enabling and then disabling a guest account if that helps.

As a test, change the password for you local account to see if that may sort it for you.

    Thanks Brink.

I think I did that but I will try again when I get back in front of the computer. Is there anything else I could try or look at so I can hit them all at once?

Other than doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this started, not so far. Changing the password would be the easiest option if it works for you.

Ok, will try that first and then try a system restore.

    Failing that...

Could it be that the profile got corrupted in which case there may be the need to create a new profile and copy the user files across to the new profile? Want to avoid that if possible though.

Hopefully, you won't have to go that route to use a new account.

I don't know what happened but when I got back in front of the computer I noticed on login that only part of the password appeared. I worked out that the num lock on the keyboard has now decided to be off on a cold boot and on on a warm boot. I looked in the bios and it is enabled but I tried disabling and enabling to no effect. Might try and remove the keyboard (and mouse as it's a wireless combo) from devices and replug in again.

At least it wasn't a corrupted user profile

Thanks again for your help Brink.
