I am having trouble setting up an auto logon in W8.1. I used trhe tutorial with the “netplwiz” command, selected the desired user and then removing the checkmark for “Require a password to logon”. What happens now is upon startup the password is denied. Then click on ,,, OK .. Arrow pointing to left and selecting the same user and putting in the same PW. This time I’m logged in.

All of the accounts were without a picture and I couldn’t tell the users apart, so I put a picture on the local account. When I clicked on OK .. Arrow pointing to the left (above paragraph) there were three user accounts labed Local .... Other User .. And what I presume is the MS account.
The first two had the same picture. I put a picture on the local account only. The account labeled other user does not appear elsewhere that I can determine. My quesions are;
1. How do I determine the MS account?
2. I want auto logon using the local account. How?
3. Can I delete the MS account and have just one local account with auto logon?

Bill

That would be the correct one to select. Are you sure that you entered the password correctly in netplwiz?

Brink,
Went through netplwiz again and it works in auto. But the Welcome comes on with my picture and takes about 20 seconds before the desktop appears.
Questions:
1. can my picture be deleted? How?
2. Is 20 seconds for the Welcome screen too long?
Thanks for your help.
Bill

Good news so far.

Q1) You could set your account picture to be the same solid color as your sign in screen to effectively make it blank.

Q2) 20 seconds is not to bad, but is a bit long. I would suspect that one of your startup programs may be slowing it up a bit. You could troubleshoot with a clean boot using the method in the tutorial below to see if it may help to ID the culprit.
