Remove local account at startup 8.1

When this PC was originally setup, owner created a local account, of which the password is lost.
A Microsoft account was set up after.

At boot, the local account comes up with incorrect password displayed. I can click on the left arrow and access the Microsoft account. I have to enter the password to logon.
When I go to PC Settings and Accounts, I only see the Microsoft account.
There's also only one account at netplwiz with the password unchecked.
I know the answers here somewhere, just can't find it.

    Hello Pete,

It sounds like Windows is trying to automatically sign in to the local account at startup, and fails since the password is no longer the same as what was setup in netplwiz.

Do you have the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box checked in netplwiz to see if that stops it?

As a test, check the box and apply to see if you still get the local account incorrect password at startup.

    As a Test?
    That fixed it.
When I put the check in, booted to the MS account logon. password needed. Password entered. boot OK. no local acct.
Did netplwiz and unchecked password needed.
Now booted to Desktop w/out password.

So, by putting the check in, reboot, take the check out, clears the local entry and fixes the problem.
Explain that one, Oh Great Brink?

    Thanks, again. As usual.

Great news. I'm glad I could help.

When you set Windows to automatically sign in to a user account using netplwiz, it stores that information in the registry and Credential Manager. Even if you delete the user account or change it's password, Windows will still use what you originally set in netplwiz. Only when you update or change it in netplwiz will it be changed at startup.

It would be nice if Windows updated netplwiz as well when you make changes to a user account, but it's independent.

    Thanks, again.
I've had a number of these where the customer, on setting up a new Windows 8/8.1, will use a local account since they don't have or know what a MS account is.
When they finally get the MS acct, somehow the logon winds up to be a local first, with incorrect password, and a left pointing arrow which takes them to their MS account as in this case.
I'll save this fix and see if it works on the next one I get.
