    it appears I've yet to set myself up as the administrator on my PC. so how do I do that?

    Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts and see if you are already an admin. If not you can change it under "Change account type".

    If you first logon your PC with the microsoft account, you are the administrator.

    And if you are not belong to the admin group and no other admin accounts available, I am afraid it is not possible to add your only account into the admin group.
    Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts and check your account as cliff s suggested,
