Help! Changed user folder name and getting trouble...

    Hello,

Recently, I changed my user folder name because it was ugly (C:/Users/bobh_012 ---> C:/Users/Bob Hopkins), and ever since I am getting errors. I signed in after the change, and was greeted by a "temporary profile" info message. I tried changing the name back, but it's no good... I still have my files, but am unable to do anything on my secondary account (the one I renamed). Is there a way to fix this, or have I f***ed up my accounts for good?

    Thanks,
    Bob Hopkins

    P.S Using Windows 8 (yeah, I know...)

    Hey mate,

Yes, renaming the user folders is bad. I would suggest creating a similar user account with the name you want, logging in to it, and moving any of the data from the old user account folder that is corrupted into the correct place on your new account, and then deleting the old account.

So Documents would be transferred to documents, etc. You would need to sign in again to any Microsoft account, dropbox, or any similar such sign-in program you may have installed. If you have saved games or such, the saves will be lost, unless you know how to transfer them over. But, as I've mentioned earlier, your documents, etc will be safe so long as you transfer it from the old user folder to the new.

Outlook, if you have it, may need to be exported/imported first, along with any favorites from Internet Explorer. Since you can't get back to the corrupted user account, you can search for the outlook .pst file in the old user account folder (usually), and favorites are also in there.

Need any further step-by-step directions, and I'll be glad to help

Thank you, I think I'll do that then, although it's really annoying that just renaming the folder would mess it up... I should have looked at the tutorials! There are so many! Why didn't I think about it? Why?!

    Thank you,
    Bob Hopkins

P.S You said "suggest", are there any other things I could do to fix it? Can I get back my old account, or is it impossible? I don't really feel like moving all my data...

    Hey mate,

There are many things that point to the user folder. It is where all your user data is stored. If you rename it, things cannot point to it any longer, and lose the pathway. You obviously can rename folders you've created, but ones generated by the computer should usually keep their original names.

I said 'suggest', because there may be another method, but I do not think it will help you in this situation. You can take a look though: User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Help Forums

Here is a quote from Brink about it:

If you prefer to just rename it, then the tutorial below will show you how to.
