Solved Can't Log On

I'm unable to log into my new Dell computer running Windows 8.1.

I set up a Windows Outlook account with a user's name and password and then used Windows Easy Transfer to move files from my old Windows 7 computer to the new Dell. That was yesterday.

Today, when I logged on to my new Dell. I discovered I had two accounts: the new one I had set-up yesterday and one that was transferred from from my old computer. I chose the new one and successfully launched Windows 8.1 using the new password established for my Windows Outlook account.

When I then attempted to log on to the transferred account I was presented with a screen that requires the password be changed. I tried both the password associated with that account on my old computer and the newly established password for my Windows Outlook account. Neither works so I'm unable to log on to that account and there is no way to return to my other, newly established account.!!! I've tried rebooting but there is no longer a choice between two accounts; the only one available is the transferred one !!!

Help, please.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, Ray1776.

Sorry, but you won't get help here attempting to get into that account, for it's against forum rules. I suggest you contact Microsoft for help. If either account is tied to your MS account and with enough personal information to verify, they may help you to get in.

@HippsieGypsie.
I think his question is legit and it has nothing to do with MS Account.
@OP
Let us call the account established using outlook (MS) account is A
and the account created from easy transfer is B

A account is MS Account
B account is a local Account.

Login using A Account

  1. Win+R->lusrmgr.msc
  2. Right click on B account->Properties and make sure that both Account is disabled unchecked & Password never expires checked then click Apply, OK
  3. Right click on B account again->Set Password and type in the new password + Confirm password then click OK.
  4. Logoff and log back in using B account

@topgundcp

Of course do as you will, but I have my suspicions.

I give people the benefit of the doubt and I think in the beginning it was legit problem too, but helping people into an account not knowing the password, which is commonly called hacking, is indeed against forum rules. Additionally, it's a new member's 1st post joining today rather anonymously. I checked to see if he was a member of 7f in which no one with that name is registered. Also, it is very rare that accounts simply disappear. Often times they become corrupted, not disappear.

I may be ignorant to this for they keep updating Easy Transfer, but I’ve never heard of transferring an entire account, just the files and setings within the old account into the new as seen here: Transferring files and settings: frequently asked questions - Windows Help

Why didn’t he simply transfer everything into the new 8.1 account?

Like I stated, I have my suspicions. Half hour after you posted the OP was gone. It’s been 6 hours since you posted. No other questions, comments, or a thank you. I’d say odds would be that it was a stolen PC or someone without authority to access one.

topgundcp is correct, it was a legitimate question and I thank him for his advise. My problem in following it is I couldn't get to account A to log in, Apparently (according to Dell), the transfer over-road that account so that only account B was accessible. Neither the folks I spoke to at Microsoft or Dell seemed to know why I couldn't access account B. The fellow at MS took me to the accountlive web site but that only reset the account A password (and, of course, that didn't help sine I couldn't get to that account to be able to use the new password).

End of saga: On the advise of Dell, the new machine is currently being reset remotely by wiping it clean and reinstalling 8.1

Moral: Be very careful when using "Windows 'Easy' Transfer" !!!

Ok, Ray1776. It seems to be a fairly good ending. I hope you understand my side. I simply do not help people get into an account. You ended up calling MS which I advised and which has everything to do with an MS account concerning security.

If you haven't already, did they speak to you about "Trusted PC" by any chance?

What is a trusted PC? - Windows Help

Are/did they save your .old file for future use?

Glad you got it sorted. However, I think the reason you could not get to A account is when you log into B account, you are login into a local account, you might have to switch to MS Account in order to log into A account:
PC settings->Accounts->Connect to Microsoft Account
