Microsoft Account and Win 8 to Win 8.1 problem

I installed the Windows 8.1 a number of months ago. Since then (I'm thinking, now), I could not sign in with my microsoft account and neither could I get an energy report using the admin command prompt, and was also having problems with the One Drive sync. I never thought these were related, but after months now, I finally, after seeing the new 15 gb free with One Drive, thought I would try to open an account to get 15 free gb. I didn't realize I could open more than one microsoft account, but yeah, a new account opened with the free 15 gb on One Drive.

Okay, so I got this new account, and I could then sign in with a Microsoft account using this new account, which also made my original Microsoft account available, but the problem starts with my original local account. I can no longer sign in with my original local account (see attachment). To me, it is as if I have made a new microsoft account with a sub-account, which is my original Microsoft account. One is for Windows 8.1, (the new MS account), and my original MS account was for Windows 8, which no longer exists. Somewhere in the process of creating the new account, I was given the option to elevate it to Administrator and I did, it even shows as Administrator in the User Accounts "change your account type" where the "standard" and "administrator" are available, but this is not where I somehow elevated it. Now, it seems to be the boss, my original MS account seems to be secondary or an alias.

I closed the account, but it won't be official til October, since there is a 60 day recovery plan. Even with the account closed, folders and things, because I'm currently signed in with my original MS account, need to logged into with the new account info, which is what I mean by "the boss". I can't be doing that if I'm closing the account.

I did get an energy report, but the .html file wouldn't open (see attachment).

I learned One Drive is different with Windows 8 or is it just 8.1, haven't got into it to much, right now.

How can I get my local account back, keep my original MS account, and still be able to sign in, get an energy report, and use One Drive sync?

Have a look in C:\Users and see what the user folders are named. Sherry is likely your original Live ID account. If you see a Sherry001 or something similar use that instead of Sherry. If your loged into the new Live ID and trying to switch it to a local account, Sherry is already used by the other one. To log into the other one you need to log out of the current one and switch user accounts.

replying to advice: I got rid of the new account, but now I have another problem. The 'other' user profile folder in C:\Users, now thinks it is "the boss".

I don't need two user profile folders, and I do not want to use this new one, because it doesn't have all my 'stuff' in it, my old local account user profile folder does (have all my 'stuff').

As it is, I keep getting pop up boxes for 'not having access to whatever', and then I need to click on some 'get access' button. I also have none of my familiar local account desktop surroundings, it's like starting fresh, even the taskbar is empty, because my taskbar is in the AppData folder in my usual user profile folder not the newly created one. Also, the Windows start screen is empty; I do not know where that folder or information would be.

I do not want to start fresh; I would just like my usual user profile folder back. And it's right there in the C:\Users folder, but it isn't the default user profile folder, the other one is.

How can I make my original user profile folder default instead of the other one, which I guess was created with the new Microsoft account and then stayed even though I deleted the new Microsoft account. I am signed in the way I had been signing in for my local account, but it (Windows) just didn't go with "my user profile", it went with this other profile; because I had been using it for that day or two, before I closed the new account and deleted it; I guess, I don't know.

Also, I still cannot open the energy report .html file, and I tried running it again, but it's the same thing with Windows Explorer as it was with Chrome; it just won't open. (see 3 attachments). The funny thing is, I couldn't get a report at all; an error message always popped up, before I did this new Microsoft account fiasco.

The one good thing from opening that new Microsoft account is that I can now switch between my local and my original Microsoft account; which I couldn't do for a number of months. I think it went bad when I upgraded to the offered free version of Windows 8.1, but I can't say for sure.

Which Live ID account are you logged into? In one of your screen shots it shows you "switching" to a local account. You want to be logged into the correct account when you do that. It's my understanding that you are switching "that account" to a local login. I would switch back to the Live ID login just to verify which user profile you are logging into. It sounds like your logging into the newer one that doesn't have all your apps and programs.

reply: Whichever account I log into (my local account or my Microsoft account) the 'other' user profile is used, and I get the same empty desktop, taskbar, and start screen.

I purchased my computer in November 2012, and I changed my Microsoft email address (sign in) in August of 2013. I don't know when Windows Live ID stopped being used and changed to Microsoft Account, but I can't see how that could be the problem, if that is what you mean.

When I opened the new Microsoft account, I could not sign in with my local account, but I did get my usual Microsoft account working, which had been the problem I was trying to correct. So, it was a kind of trade-off, I guess.

After I deleted the new account, and my usual Microsoft account was now letting me sign in, I went to "Change PC Settings">"Accounts">"Your Account" and then just went through the steps to switch to a Local account sign in. I put in my usual local account name and password and it was accepted, but then I ended up with this 'other' user profile as my default user profile for both the Microsoft account and my Local account. This 'other' user profile started when the new Microsoft account was created, and just stayed even though the account has been deleted.

The png image you mentioned, is when I could not sign in with my usual Local account, which isn't exactly the problem, now. I can sign in with my Local account, but I do not get my usual Local account user profile, which then leaves everything empty (taskbar, desktop, start screen).

OK, your Microsoft Live ID account you setup on the internet with Microsoft, and the user account you setup on your PC are two different things. The only thing that links them is your One Drive Sync settings. If you create a new user on your PC it is going to have its own set of user folders etc. The Start Screen may be different too. Just giving it the same User name isn't going to transfer everything over. To be honest it's really hard to tell what you did exactly. If it was me, I'd back up anything I didn't want to lose to external media and do a factory reset. Then log in with the Live ID that is currently setup with Microsoft. Then switch to a local account.
