Issues with switching user.

I've never needed a 2nd account until my partners laptop died. I've noticed however, that Win 8's implementation of it, is worse than previous versions of Windows.

Firstly, when switching user (which as far as I know can only be done with ctrl+alt+del) the screen will react oddly.
If I switch from mine to hers and then back, Chrome will be on my 2nd screen and explorer windows and apps open on the 2nd screen will be on the first. Sometimes it also puts everything (including desktop icons) on the 1st screen, as if I disconnected the 2nd screen. It is very frustrating if I have folders and icons on my 2nd screen in the way I want to see them and switching accounts will bring everything to the 1st screen. Any solutions to this? Or reasons behind it.

Another issue, although not a major one, is when logging off. I have a green lockscreen set for my profile, same as my partner. This, as the name suggests, should be the lock screen. But, if I log out (of either account) I get to a lockscreen which uses this wallpaper:

It also has a purple scheme rather than the red we both use. I've tried to find in the setttings a way to change this. But I can't.

Hello Darkstarr, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below includes some other ways to switch users to help.
It could be a video driver issue causing the displays to be reset and all windows to go to the main display instead of how they were.

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens.

  • The user lock screen is the one that displays when a user locks the PC while still signed in to Windows, and when the user is selected on the sign in screen, times out, and returns to the lock screen. Each user is able to change their lock screen background image to an image of their choice.
  • The default Lock screen image is the one that displays when there are no users currently signed in to Windows or selected on the sign in screen.

Hope this helps, :)

Perfect. Solved that wallpaper issue. Bizarre Microsoft have made is so difficult to do it yourself.
As for the graphics issue, maybe in the future I will get a new card, but for now I will put up with it.

It could just be an issue with the current driver version, and a new driver release could sort it.

Just need to bump this again.
The problem will occur if switching users, or in some cases running a fullscreen game on Screen 1.
It is bizarre and inconsistant. Widgets will sometimes move to screen one while icons remain, other times everything moves or nothing moves. I am hoping for an app or tweak which locks it in place.
I have the latest drivers, including beta ones and this issue has been happening for months. I feel maybe going back to windows 7 might fix the issue, but that is a step I don't want to take.

It sounds like some sort of issue for when the displays are initialized. Sort of like one display is disconnected or signal loss causing the other display to be the only display for a few seconds causing the items to go to the one display like that.

How are both monitors connected? For example, HDMI, DVI, etc...

If you haven't already, see if switching their connections on the graphics card may help.

Both are connected via DVI. I just tried the connection swapping. Same issue. I fear it is one of those "it is the way it is" things. It's very frustrating.

When a new graphics driver version is available next, test this again to see if they may help to see if it was just a driver issue.

Doesn't appear to be a graphics issue
And it is absolutely INFURIATING. I have some widgets on my 2nd screen. If I ctrl alt del and click switch user, and then click back on my profile again, the widgets are on screen one. As I said, it's as if the graphics card is being initialised, which is stupid because I am switching user, not shutting down. Or in this case, pretending to switch.
Perhaps another graphics card will help, but I can't be the only person with this?
Can someone test it? When I click switch user, both screen goes black for a second, like the system is recognising them again.
Can anyone emulate this?
