Solved User Not Showing Up On Logon Screen

Hello,

I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It was fine until I decided to change my account to a microsoft account. After logging out and restarting, I could not see my user on the log on screen. It still showed up in Control Panel and PC Settings after logging in as another Admin.

To try to fix this I created a new user and was going to copy files into it but this new user didn't show up either.

Is this a Win 8.1 bug or is there something you have to do?

I can always revert to Windows 8 because I backed up my computer before updating but I would not prefer this.

Thanks,
997R8V10

Hello 997R8V10, and welcome to Eight Forums. :)

Do you have a back arrow at the top left corner to click on to show all users on the sign in screen instead of just the last user?

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5752-signing-windows-8-a.html

Use the tutorial below to see what details it shows for the affected user account, and post them here to see if it may reveal a cause for it not showing up on the sign in screen.

Thanks for the quick reply:

It doesn't show the back arrow and it shows all 3/5 users. The two missing are my old and newly created accounts.

I will run the tutorial when I get home from work.

Thanks,

I don't see anything wrong. Here's the accounts it shows me. Check to see if that is what you are seeing as well. :)

  • Admin - Enabled, and should show on the sign in screen.
  • Administrator (built-in elevated Administrator) - disabled
  • Guest - disabled
  • Prithv? - Enabled, and should show on the sign in screen.
  • PrithviSiteSvcAcct - Enabled, and should show on the sign in screen.
  • pshivaraman - Enabled, and should show on the sign in screen.
  • Thilly - Enabled, and should show on the sign in screen.

As a test, sign in to your "Admin" account, and delete those two user accounts, and any other that you do not want. Afterwards, create them again to see if they show up afterwards.

Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose from those accounts first.

As a test, I deleted pshivaraman and recreated it. Same issue.

Also, I just got a new computer with windows 8.1 and it seems to work fine. It seems like upgrading and editing user accounts is a bad idea. I want to give this problem another day but I'm seriously considering a.win 8.1 factory reset.

Well,

I didn't do a refresh but I did a factory reset because my computer is junky and that seemed to reset to windows 8 instead of 8.1. So I set it up then immediately updated to 8.1. Is there a better way to install a fresh 8.1?

I'm afraid not with an OEM copy of Windows that came preinstalled. :(

I'm glad you got everything sorted, but sorry it took a reset.
