I accidentally changed the user account settings (my only account) to standard from admin. Now i can't download, uninstall software, or change it back to admin. I am running windows 8.1 and have very little knowledge about computers.

What I have tried:
  • Clicking manage on "this computer" to change things (A dialog box says I can't)
  • Going into UAC and changing it... "your system admin has blocked..."
  • Trying to enable hidden admin account (I don't know how... I think vista used to have a hidden admin)
  • Making another account (It wont let me)

I was admin and revoked my own privileges... I am the only account on the computer. I have no idea what to do... Please help!

Edit: I tried looking for an answer. I guess no one was as dumb as me.

Here we go again. You are the 4th person within a week doing this so don't feel alone.

Please use this link to fix it: http://www.eightforums.com/user-acc...nt-win-8-1-update-how-restore.html#post389686

EDIT: If you don't have the Windows 8 Installation disk, then use this link to create a boot disk:

Make this post into a sticky thread. I thought I asked the same question few weeks ago:p

I think I know how this is happening. When you go into Control Panel - User Accounts it will open your account.

If you then click "Change Account Type" the window opens with "Standard User" pre-selected, even if you are currently an Administrator.

Someone not in the know may think this is what their account type currently is. If you click "Change Account Type" (thinking it will do nothing) instead of "Cancel" you are screwed.

This window should open with your current account type selected; it should be up to the user to actually change the account type selection and click go.

Everything is greyed out unless there's a another Admin account then he would not have problem changing it back.

But this will make him a standard user account

If you don't have access to your recovery you can always use offline NT password recovery to promote your account back to an administrator.
This page isn't specifically a walkthrough of that task but it does show the option
Offline NT pw & reg-editor, walkthrough
Since this is Windows forum, I'd like to stay away from LINUX. However, if you prefer to use LINUX.
  1. Download Linux Mint 17, put in a USB then boot up.
  2. Install chntpw
Then follow the screens below:

The tool I linked to a above is basically just a "bootable" implementation of chntpw and its only a couple meg.
