Change Login Name on OS Login

I recently had to update my brother-inlaw's new laptop to the 8.1 version. He doesn't use email so when I was prompted to enter an email address when you installed he update, I just put in a random email address and password not knowing I'd need that info to sign into the laptop every time you turned it on. Once I finished the install, I didn't restart it to check to see what it would do. Now he tells me when the laptop starts up, it wants the password for the account I entered when I put in the random account during install. He tells me you cannot change the user name (email address) so I'm at a loss here on what to do to get him logged onto his laptop. Is there something I can do to get that info changed or at least get him logged into the computer so that info can be changed? I have created a new email for him to use but it does no good when I can't even get into the computer.

8.1 requires a Windows live login, in order to work. You do not use the Windows Live login, you cannot use the computer.

Can I switch to a local account without actually logging into the computer? The problem I am having is I can't change the account name (email address) and do not have the password I put in when I updated the computer to 8.1.

I'm trying to find an option other than a clean install. It should have switched to a local account since it wasn't a valid email.

Well it apparently is a valid email. Just not his. I signed him up with a new one but when I tried to use the name that I used when I updated it, it said it was already taken. Basically it's the password that's holding me up.

Looks like you will need to re-install.What are the specs on the laptop, it should have a factory reset option.

I would still give it a chance. Just don't make that mistake on your next install.

@ clancaster23:
Did you try getting into command prompt from the login screen?

I'll have to check it out. I don't have it here. I figured that was going to be my only option. Windows 8 blows.

Let me just check I understand you correctly. Windows 8 "blows" because:
  1. You decided to use a Microsoft Account (email based logon) when setting it up, instead of a normal local account
  2. You set it up with an email account not belonging to you, with false password
  3. Now Windows does not let you to login with this false email / password combination
OK, I understand you. Of course that is Windows 8's fault, not yours. Have you thought about contacting Microsoft, complaining about these stupid security systems they put in Windows? What kind of operating system does not let users log in with false credentials? Outrageous!

That being said, get your Windows install media ready and reinstall or if you want to make it a bit faster you can just reset the Windows 8 (reset is at least 3 times faster than complete reinstall, basically doing the same thing). To reset it do this (full tutorial here, below a short version):
  • On login screen showing your false account, click the Shutdown button at bottom right, press and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click Restart to open Troubleshooting Options (Important: Without pressing the SHIFT key while clicking RESTART Windows simply restarts, without Troubleshooting options):

  • Select Troubleshoot:

    2014-04-06_02h29_31.png
  • Select Reset your PC:

    2014-04-06_02h30_00.png
  • Follow instructions on screen
  • When Windows has reset itself, this time create a local account
