Solved W8.1 sometimes can't find my profile

Sometimes when I boot Windows 8.1, I get a generic screen that tells me that my profile couldn't be accessed and I now have a temporary profile. I went to the event viewer and it also said that it couldn't find my profile. I am the only user and administrator. Is there a way to make a new user profile AND not loose my files and settings.

Hi lenberman,

Hope all is well :)

You can try the steps on this post:

http://www.eightforums.com/user-acc...-keeps-signing-me-into-temporary-profile.html

You could trying working through this tutorial:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/38838-user-profile-service-failed-sign-fix-windows-8-a.html

Best way of keeping your data is to link it in to a Microsoft Account so you get a standard experience across a multiple devices.

You can create a new user and copy across your data from the old accounts User profile.

Can I just go to safe mode and make a new admin account with a slightly different name, then delete the current, corrupted account?

Len,

Sure you could if you like while signed in to an administrator account, and don't get the same error for the new account. :)

Thanks for the quick answer, If I setup another user admin account and it has the same occational problem, then would it require a restore to factory?

I don't understand why I would need to go into the registry just to delete a user? Can't I just make a new admin user, copy over the data and be done with it. Am I missing something? It wouldn't be the first time ;)

The method in the tutorial doesn't delete the actual user account. Instead it only deletes the user account's profile in the registry so that it will be automatically recreated since it was corrupted.

thank you for your advice. I haven't worked in the registry too much, but if I screw it up I guess can do the factory restore anyway.

What I did was create a new administrator account with a slightly different name. Everything is working well and the computer opens to the proper (new) user. The original corrupted user administrator account is still there. I have been restarting the computer time after time and it has not opened on the temp desktop yet. Can I just now delete the corrupted account, and I'm done? Or, do I still have to do something in the registry? Thanks for all your help.

Sure, after you copy anything you may have wanted from the old account to the new one, you could delete the old account. :)
