1-HotMail & 1-Local users. Can I merge to 1-Live user?

    1-HotMail & 1-Local users. Can I merge to 1-Live user?

First let me say I spend almost ALL my time in the desktop and my main pc's still have win 7.

When I upgraded an old win 7 laptop to 8 I used my HotMail account. After getting some Store apps and setting up SkyDrive I decided I did not like having MS see everything so I created a local account and was able to move most data over, I think from using the Public folders, except for some DRM'ed Flash video courses. On both accounts desktop I believe I installed the win 7 Skydrive download. Next I upgraded in-place to 8.1 and basically had to repeat this process all over again.

Upgrading to 8.1 and trying to get password protected file makes me think I might cave to MS and try to merge both accounts into 1 LIVE account. Does everybody really like having everything on a MS Live account? It seems like they force you if you did want to use any apps and desktop Skydrive. So I'm hoping to get some help trying to merge my 2 accounts into 1 new MS Live user account and not lose the few apps I bought or the DRM. I know it's probably hopeless but any help or suggestions on how would be most welcome.

    Hello chockfullof,

No worries. When you purchase apps in the Store, you will always be able to download and install it again without having to purchase it again.

If you like, here's a workaround if you wanted your current local account to be your Microsoft account, but your current Microsoft account will be switched and deleted.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Thanks for the links. They do help, but I didn't and still don't fully understand Microsoft accounts and apps, etc.

The links seem to say my apps only can be (re)downloaded from the original Microsoft account they came, were bought, from. What I want to do is create a new "primary alias" Microsoft account then close the old Microsoft account. I then want to still be able to use and redownload the apps I purchased on the old MS account using my new MS account. I cannot figure out if that is possible from the tutorials.

For that I would recommend to change the primary alias to the email address you want, and leave the old email address as one of the aliases to be able to have what you purchased from the Store available.

If you remove the old email address completely, you may not be able to download the apps you purchased with it again.

I suspected being presented that solution, but it is still suboptimal for me leaving that old account out there and probably forgotten. Are you sure that is the only way? If you are sure then I only have a few, little used, apps purchased so far so maybe I can still do what I want, but starting over app-wise?

Also, I think a better explanation of what I want to do is to MERGE the local & MS user accounts into the existing Microsoft user account associated only with the new MS primary email account. I'm still not sure from the tutorials presented how to proceed. Also, I do not want to lose my DRM in the current/future MS account.

    Thanks

You could do what I posted above to switch the accounts around to make your current local account a Microsoft account using the old address.

Afterwards, change your primary alias. As a test, you could remove the old email address to see if you are able to still download and install your purchased apps. If not, then you could always just add the old email address back to be able to.

I'm afraid that I don't have any purchased apps to test to see if they may carry over or not with a new primary alias.

Brink, we not clearly communicating what I want to do. I do not want to SWITCH one user account for another and then delete the switched out user account. I do want to MERGE the local user account, i.e. apps/programs/files/settings/etc, into 1 Microsoft email user account then delete the local user account. Only then do I want to switch the email address of the sole remaining user account.

I clearly understand what you want to do. What I posted is a workaround to merge them.

The problem is that the local account and Microsoft accounts are two completely different types of accounts. You cannot just merge these accounts in the traditional way.

Doing what I posted above will allow you to switch the local account to your Microsoft account. Switching will let you keep what's currently in the local account, and add the settings and apps from the Microsoft account. You'll still need to manually copy over any files you wanted from the old Microsoft account (switched to a local account).

Thank you for your patience. Sorry it took me sooo long to truly understand what you were trying to tell me.

Currently I am replying from my win 7 computer because the win 8.1 cannot connect via wired or wireless. This has been an ongoing frequently intermittent problem. I will try your solution when tht 8.1 pc is back on the net.

    Thanks again.
