I'm giving this a go. I want to redo the start screen so I'm gonna look into it. I'll post back when/if I get anywhere.

There is a quick, two-step tweak you could try.
PLEASE, TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I'm not sure of the repercussions of this tweak, if any!

Go to Control Panel►User Accounts►Change your account name, in the dialog box enter nothing by holding down the Alt key and entering 0160 on the numeric keypad then release the Alt key, Save changes.
Then, go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures and change 'user-40.png' to 'user-40.backup' then restart your machine.
The 'Change account picture/Lock/Sign out' fly-out menu will still be there, you just have to hover over it.
(Just as a precaution, document any changes you make!)

    With mouse hover:
    Attachment 37656
    Without:
    Attachment 37657

(Haven't figured out a way to get rid of the word 'Start' yet though! )
