    it was 7 which I updated to 8. Prior to this I had to update to 8.1 via the store.
    This time I used my laptops windows 8.1 standard version media. my key wouldn't work (said it was blocked) however it let me enter it in the add features box. on reboot the activation window vanished.
    I then entered the media set key and that worked too.
    Laptop is pre activated by bios.
    I still have no idea why this worked to be honest.

    I did try the telephone activation but after I entered the numbers it said invalid connecting you to an operator then hung up! Maybe that did it?

    Na, you would have to go completely through the phone activation process for that to work.

    It seems like the second attempt to activate online using Add Features was enough to let it activate. Sort of like doing the old double install clean install with an upgrade copy, and only activating on the second go.
