    Guest Account Logs In Automatically

    Hi,

I have an Admin & a Guest account on my Windows 8.1 Pro (32 bit). I have enabled the option to go directly to the desktop (through toolbar properties > Navigation) in both the accounts. However, I notice that at times when I start my PC, it logs me in directly to the Guest account instead of taking me to the page where I should see the date & time (before login page). This does not happen always. Any help on this? Thanks!

Any other user faces this issue? It just logged me in directly to the Guest account again. This is definitely a system bug...

I've never had this issue, however, I'd recommend trying this -

    1. Find your way into the administrator account.
    2. Disable the guest account.
    3. Re-enable it.
    4. See if the problem persists.

If you don't use the guest account, consider permanently disabling it to avoid this issue happening all together.

    Hello Zilla,

Since the Guest account doesn't (can't) have a password, it will be automatically signed in to it when you click on it's user icon on the sign in screen, and if the Guest account was the last one that was signed in when you restart or start up the PC next.

To avoid this, you could do any option below:

    • Make sure the administrator account was the last one that was signed in.
    • (recommended) Turn off the guest account, and use a password protected standard user account instead.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Shawn, either the user clicks on the Guest account picture to login or the system automatically logs you in to the Guest account (without clicking anything) but not both at the same time. Couple of questions before I proceed forward with a new standard account:

    1. Will disabling & re-enabling the Guest account impact any data on the Guest account?

    2. If I disable Guest account & create another standard account, which locations (files/folders) will the user from the standard account be able to access from the admin account?

    3. And lastly, if I disable the Guest account & create another standard account, what do I do to reclaim the space which was earlier occupied (files/folders) by the Guest account (that is, how can I remove all traces of Guest account after disabling it)?

    Thanks!

    Zilla,

Q1) No. It will only disable or enable it the same as the built-in Administrator account. Anything in the guest account user folders will remain when disabled.

Q2) A standard account will not be able to access anything different than a guest account. If anything requires elevated rights, the standard account must provide an administrator's password (if given) to approve.

Q3) After you disable the Guest account while signed in an administrator account, you will be able to safely delete the "C:\Users\Guest" folder to reclaim the space it takes. Be sure to copy anything you do not want to lose from this folder before deleting it though.

Shawn: I just realized that this happens even with a standard user account. I disabled the Guest account & created a standard account. I checked the option to go directly to the desktop (through toolbar properties > Navigation) in the standard account. When I login to Windows, it takes me directly to the standard account if I had logged in to the standard account in my last session. This was not observed in Windows 7. How can I prevent this from happening?

I'm thinking that using OPTION ONE in the tutorial may be the solution to your issues. This will have all users on the sign in screen by default instead of only the last user.

Sign in - Show All Users or Last User in Windows 8

Shawn: I tried to follow the tutorial with option 1 & it did not work. I must mention that option 1 had a link on how to unblock a file with screenshots of the file properties window. However, when I right clicked on the file & selected properties, I did not see the "Unblock" option (refer the screenshot).

I ran the file as an Administrator, logged in to the standard account & then restarted the system to check & it took me straight to the standard account again. Help!
