Relocate User folders into Google drive folder?

My buddy wants me to relocate his Documents and Pictures folders (by going to Properties/Location tab/Move on those folders) so that they would be in his Google Drive folder, and thereby backed up automatically to the cloud. Has anyone here tried that, or have any thoughts about it? I know that Windows can be touchy about certain things, not sure about this. Thanks

I guess I wasn't clear in my question. I know how to move the folders, I am just not sure if moving them into the Google Drive folder will create any problems.

Thanks

And why would it create problems? Google Drive folder is just another folder, as far as the file system is concerned.

Here's what I did in Windows 8 using the desktop Sky Drive app and works well. Created a Document, Music, Picture folders in Sky drive. During the install of the desktop Sky drive app I set Sky drive to use/sync to my external 3 terabyte drive. In the desktop explorer I went to Skydrive (which now points to the external drive), right clicked on the Document folder and added it to the Documents Library. Then in the explorer pane in the desktop explorer I right clicked on the Documents Library, Selected "Properties" from the context menu. Under the Library Locations I clicked on the Document location on the external drive and clicked on Set Save Location. Repeat for other Libraries. Now when I save or accesses a document it saves or opens a document from my Sky drive (really the local synced location which is faster). I realize I have the document really in two locations - local folder and Sky drive - but when accessing the library it seems as one location and applications - Media Player - work well, sharing my music between PC's and the performance is great as it's really playing from the local sync'd location. Haven't used Google drive folder but should be able to do some thing along the same lines.

Do it the way Jladwig suggests, it should work.

Ok I just set it up - I installed Googol Drive, synced my folders, and I got most of 15 GB free. I set up "My Documents" in my Library like this:

And then I opened a WORD Doc and saved it, choosing "Libraries-Documents-Documents" as the destination. It went into my Googol drive.

I would refrain from totally changing the location of My Documents from it's default location to /User/GoogolDrive/Documents, simply add Googol Drive into the Documents Library then you can choose it as a destination, and it will save on your PC and Cloud at trhe same time.

Cos we only have 15 GB on Googol Drive, and I have a few hundred gigs of data in my Documents fodder.

jladwig, thanks for that info, looks good. I've done a test the way I originally stated on just one user folder, it seems ok. But I like your way of doing it and may switch it over if anything funny happens.

XweAponX, thanks for trying that.

I would refrain from totally changing the location of My Documents from it's default location to /User/GoogolDrive/Documents,
What is your reason for not wanting to move My Documents into Google Drive? Is it just about the size issue? I've been concerned that Windows may have some permissions issue or conflict with the Google Drive configuration that could mess things up.

The permissions may be different, usually I don't mess with default libraries, but adding to them is no problem

jladwig's method is a good workaround. One thing to keep in mind is that some programs create their folders e.g. in My Documents. Therefore, files kept in these folders won't get synced.

The permissions may be different, usually I don't mess with default libraries, but adding to them is no problem
Permissions won't be different, because Google Drive folder is not different from any other folder you create inside your profile. Permissions are different when you move personal folders to another drive.

I guess as long as it is in your user folder, it will be the same then.

It's a good point too, as we don't know where exactly Google Drive folder has been created :) At any rate, if it's a single user PC, permissions don't matter.

The test I've been doing on my computer with the Downloads folder relocated into Google Drive folder has worked without any problems for the last few days. I expect to set it up on my friend's computer next week.
