How do I change the password of a user to something simple

I am using a hotmail account for an account, but it is 8 character password, and I would like it to be shorter than that so that i can use it pretty conveniently. how can i do this?

Sorry, but a Microsoft account's password must have at least 8 characters, and up to 16 characters.

The best you can do now is pick a short word with numbers you wont forget like a zipcode or phone prefix..

Some passwords DEMAND you use upper and lowercase letters in addition to numbers and or symbols...

Seems that websites feel the need to protect us from ourselves..

It was most likely a local account instead of a Microsoft account.

So if I just made up an email address instead of using a microsoft one, would I be able to make an account with shorter passwords?

No. Only Microsoft accounts have email addresses associated to them.

A local account is the same type of account that you used in Vista and Windows 7.

If you wanted to keep using a Microsoft account to be able to use Store apps, then using a PIN to sign in with would be about the only way to have shorter typing.

Heres the funny thing about the Microsoft account...

A few months ago my friends daughter got a laptop with Win 8 and she wanted to setup separate user accounts for herself andf her sister.

I told her to type in her MSN account, and select a password that was not her email's password..

After she was done we tried to sign in and it would not allow us.. After about 5 minutes, I asked her if she was sure she typed her MSN account correctly, she said NO she typed her YAHOO email account and it accepted it!!!
She just had to verify that it was a legit email account from her yahoo mail and it accepted it as a valid MSN account!
She has access to her win apps and everything...

If you make Microsoft user accounts, the advantage it claims is that your browser history, account picture, and color will sync. None of that are important. What's important is, does it also sync add-ons like Lastpass and programs that I downloaded too? Does it sync the browsers with the exact same bookmarks? It takes time to re-download the programs for each new user account I create which makes the process labor intensive for about an hour or so.

You will better see what is synced in the screenshots in the tutorial below. It will also show you how to turn on or off syncing these items for what you want to have synced or not.
It will sync Internet Explorer favorites, history, and settings by default.

Store apps will be synced, but desktop apps will not be. Desktop apps will have to be reinstalled on a different PC.

Syncing can take a few moments to completely finish after signing in though, but it will be done automatically in the background.

I see that it indeed was a local account. In that case, if I associate a Microsoft email address with it in order to have the advantage of being able to download apps like the weather app, would I have to change the password to 8 characters?

If you switch your local account to a Microsoft account, then the new password will indeed need to be at least 8 characters.
