Solved New mail address, new Windows Live ID???

Hi,

Don't know whether this is the right forum for this question, but here goes :)

The email provider I've been using for 15 years is closing down, and I'll lose my current email address. It's the one which identifies my Windows Live ID, and which I've used to access my Microsoft account, buy Windows 8 etc. etc.

I've read that you can't rename a Microsoft account, that is, change the user name (email address). Am I right in assuming that I'll have to open a new Windows account (new Windows Live ID) when I get the new email address?

:D

Just a quick update on efforts to change my Live ID email address. I'd already managed to create a new address within Live.com. As if to confirm it, I'd been offered to "Start using your new alias: xxxx@live.no" (where "xxxx" stands in for my name, and ".no" stands for Norway where I'm holed up).

Now, the next step is to actually change the email address of my Microsoft Account. After navigating to the Overview part of Account page, I click on "Rename account".

There are two options here. Create a new email address / Use a different address. I choose the second option because I want to use xxxx@live.no.

This results in the following notice: "You can't use @live.no in your Microsoft account email address. Please try a different email address."

To cut a long story short, after trying umpteen times and approaches to solve the problem, I did a bit of Googling yesterday. The problem has been aired on the Microsoft Community forum. Here's a snippet of the official explanation (to which about 350 people have responded):

We have discovered that a small percentage of users experienced problems accessing some of their email messages after they renamed their account. As a result of that investigation, we have taken two actions:

  • We first turned off the “rename” functionality to investigate any negative issues resulting from renames.
  • We have fixed many user accounts that were renamed and experienced issues accessing some of their email.
We are still actively working to resolve all issues associated with account rename and apologize for the delay. The rename option will be activated when we are confident that no further issues will arise.

Here's the web address for that conversation:

Why can't I change my Microsoft account email? - Microsoft Community

There's another discussion here:

Why can’t I change my Microsoft Account email? | trekker.net

So as a last resort I went back and clicked on "create a new address". You're given four options: @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @hotmail.no and @live.no.

I can't use @live.no because it's already taken - by me. I try xxxx@hotmail.no. That works (amazingly!). I then deleted my xxxx.live.no address, went back to the "rename account page and created a new address for my Live ID, xxxx.live.no. That worked too.

I don't know what the moral of all this is, but I'm sure there is one.

well, all is not perfect yet - I've started a new thread because I can't get (Office) Outlook 2007 to follow rules (i.e. filter and place mail in specified folders). I can create the rule, but it's just not followed.

It's beginning to dawn on me that imap accounts have certain limitations in this area in particular, and I may opt for a pop3 account instead.

If I do, at least I'll know how to go about changing my Live ID :)

crazyloverd,

Are you able to pin your apps back to your Start screen?
Whatever "C:\Users\(user-name)" folder you had originally for your Microsoft account should be the same one. The second new folder would be from when you switched to a local account. If need be, create a new folder on your desktop, then look in the "C:\Users\(user-name)\Desktop" folders to see which one has the new folder in it. That would confirm it.

Do you have your sync settings turned on for the Microsoft account, and confirmed your email address from the email MS sent you? If not, turn them on to have them synced and confirm the change. If you do, then sometimes it may take a little bit to fully sync right after signing into the newly renamed account.

When you switched to a local account and back to a Microsoft account to toggle using the new email address, it's normal for it to keep using the tony folder.

It just won't keep using the same folder "dan" when switching to a local account from a MS account.

If you are sure that the Dan folder is not associated to an user account anymore, then you could safely delete it if you like.

You should be able to just copy your files from the folders in dan to the same corresponding folders in tony.
