My friends daughter has an acer aspire v5 571 running windows 8 with phoenix bios running uefi boot. She has changed, then forgotten administrator password. Normally i would boot from a password reset disk and blank the password works fine with win 7 but with the UEFI it wont boot from anything other than windows boot manager. I have changed the boot order in bios to put usb or cd rom first and i have tried both a cd and a usb stick to boot from but as long as UEFI is enabled it wont boot from them. If I select Legacy instead, it will boot from either and boot into the linux enviroment and run up to the point where it is looking for a windows partition to load a file from to blank the password, it sees the 500Mb disk but doesnt recognise it as a windows partition. I also tried Alt plus F10 to enter the restore partition to replace win 8 with a fresh version but both with UEFI or Legacy modes it doesnt boot to this nothing happens. Lastly I tried logging onto microsoft account from another PC and managed to reset password via email but now it says to make sure laptop is online when it boots but it doesnt have an ethernet port so have now run out of ideas. Any help appreciated !

Update -
Used Hirens boot CD
Switched bios to Legacy Mode
Booted from Hirens then used Ntfile utility to go into windows/system32 and renamed Utilman.exe to utilman.old
Copied cmd.exe then renamed cmd.exe to Utilman.exe
Then rebooted switched Bios back to UEFI and rebooted again.
Now at windows login i clicked logo at bottom left which brought up Cmd window.
Use net user command to try and replace password for only user listed but it failed to do this, it said it didnt have privelages maybe because it wasnt a local account but a microsoft one.
Used net user to create a new user with a known password made this user active.
Then rebooted logged on as new user and went into users to remove the lost password from existing account. This didnt work as there was no option to do this I guess because its not a local account. I then logged onto my wireless connection and let it do updates and am about to try the old user account with the new password I created on Microsoft live and hopefully job done. Except for swapping Utilman and cmd back.

Only Dell can provide you with that information and only if you can provide proof of ownership. The password is not universal but specific to your computer. If it were possible to obtain this information from a forum the security value of the password would be essentially zero.
