    username is set up incorrectly

I have a new Windows 8 computer. I set it up with my Bob Campbell account. It works fine, except for one thing.

    The environment variable username=Bob

That's a problem. It seems to be a glitch in Windows 8.

On Windows 7, when I set up a new computer my username environment variable would be Bob Campbell.

Now I can't connect to a SQL Server 2008 database that requires a Windows Profile login.

How can I change the username variable as well as my C:\Users\Bob folder name?

Can you change it via the SET command in a Command Prompt window?

i.e. Open a Command Prompt (probably with Administrative privileges?) and type SET to display all the variables to verify what is set for "username." Then type in SET USERNAME="Bob Campbell"
(I think quotation marks will be needed because of the space.)

Not sure that will work, but what happens when you try?

Personally, I would only change user name by creating a new user at the appropriate level and deleting the older one--after copying everything needed to the new user Account. I'd rather not invite potential problems. The realized ones can be so recalcitrant.

I believe on the initial set up you would need to remove the gap in the name, BobCampbell or BobCampbellPC.

With Windows 8 you can't leave a gap or use a hyphen - anymore.

It's best to set up a new account for this new User name as znod mentioned.

In response to wpcoe, "Can you change it via the SET command in a Command Prompt window?":

Yes. I can open a command prompt window and change the username variable to whatever, but that doesn't get saved after I exit the window.

I can also change it using the Advanced system properties of the Control Panel, System and Security. But it won't affect anything.

theog posted a link to what I think may be a relatively new update of an older tutorial even though dated Aug. 2012. Check it out. I would use it in preference to the SET command. I don't know what all "stands behind" the procedures in the tutorial. Earlier procedures that "just changed" the user name without adding a new user, etc., seemed to generate problems. So, that's why I, as least previously, would opt for creating a new user, etc. At least there now is a new-to-me changing user name procedure for me to think about. Until I learn more, I'm sticking with the create a new user, etc., procedure.
