    Win 8 User Account Corrupt after KB2769165 / KB2770917

    Has anyone experienced this:

After installing updates KB2769165 and KB2770917 that the user accounts will only display the Win 8 tiles?

The first account I noticed this on has these symptoms:
    • Live tiles don't display.
    • Scrolling is inactive (no scroll bar at the bottom)
    • Right clicking won't work
    • Pressing the Windows key (or Windows D) to go to the "Win 7" desktop doesn't work.
    • Pressing Control Alt Del to sign out allows me switch to another account - all other functions hang with no feedback (nothing displays)

The second account (administrator account) is where I started researching this problem, went back to the Win 8 tiles, and when I went to switch to another account by clicking on my name, it locked up and now has the same problems as the first account.

Besides re-building the accounts, any thoughts on how else to proceed? Would a System Restore bring back a previous NTUSER.DAT file as that seems to be corrupt on both?

**NOTE** I ran Windows Update from my administrator account and it did not create a restore point for this update as I was accustomed to in Win 7. The other updates that were released on Tuesday do indicate a System Restore point.

FYI - Thankfully I have a 3rd account (administrator) that I have set to go to the "Win 7" desktop by using

Update: I was able to change the registry settings for the account so Classic Shell 'skips Metro Screen' and guess what? I can get to the desktop and it works.

When I switch back to the tiles, same symptom - the account doesn't work. I can, however, get back to the desktop by pressing the Windows key twice (first time, screen flash, then second time desktop).

Does anyone know where the tile information / screen can be found as this seems to be where the corruption really is?

And with a little more digging, I found a solution that solved my problem:
Window 8 tiles are frozen, unresponsive. - Microsoft Community

In a nutshell, Safe Mode is necessary and then uninstalling a metro app that may have been the cause (in this case Clock from the Win 8 Store.) I can't tell you if this is really the case but as you'll see in the above mentioned link, a possible common thread?

Looks like I spoke too soon - even by uninstalling both Clock and Accuweather I ran into the same problems where the Win 8 tiles became unresponsive. I've now turned off all live tiles and I'm wondering if it's video card driver related? I have ATI Radeon 5700 in Crossfire with the latest drivers (10/22/2012) and am unable to launch the Catalyst Control Center.

FYI - Going into Safe Mode for both accounts corrects the problem and then re-starting.

    Hi everyone

The problem appears to be with a running process, nlsX86cc, which prevents the updates from being installed. You will need to stop this running process before installing the updates.

Looks like there is more going on here than first realized....

Just a quick follow up if you're having a similar problem:
Lewskannen's post above is a good read - it seems that the add a classic start button type apps are having challenges with the latest round of patches.

When I first saw my problem, I just installed KB2769165 / KB2770917. These didn't install on the first go around. I didn't realize this because of the Automatic Install settings default in Windows 8.

I deleted one account and re-created it from scratch (nothing was important so I didn't bother copying files over, etc.) which corrected the problem.

The main account I had seemed too risky to try and re-create because of some issues I was seeing with a specific application.

I solved my problem (for the most part) by uninstalling the Classic Shell start program. Occasionally now I see this message when signing out: The app CWNPTransportlmpl is preventing you from signing out.

Be sure to read the specific uninstall instructions for these apps. At least for Classic Shell there is some hooking so by following those steps you can be sure to not have any remnants.

Perhaps this will help you, too?
