    It's odd because when I click the Browse button the hard drive is there and I can go through it and all the folders are correct.

    Funny you suggest that, I was just following a similar guide.

    Unfortunately, after the hour long 'clear all' it did not make a difference. I can see the drive through the 'Browse for folder' dialogue but not on the main window. Tough.

    Try reinstalling Windows 7, & than upgrade to Windows 8 from the desktop.

    If one day I'll see nothing on the list, I'll try not to freak out and take a look here.
    And that day came after all: my hp dv6 doesn't have any drive listed.
    Had to go to hp or intel and get the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology package.
    (older sata drivers... iaStorAC.inf are included on the Windows DVD but newer ones, especially raid versions, are not).

    I've extracted the files on a usb stick and had to browse through all needed folders up to the driver's inf.
    Located in ..\Drivers\AHCI\x64\ there is iaStorAC.inf that is needed in my case.
    Worked nicely.

    Cheers!

    theog, maybe you (or someone else) can help me. I have desperately been trying to get a clean installation of Windows 8 onto my new laptop. I used Microsoft's tool and an .iso file (Windows 8 x64, the same version that came with the laptop) to create a bootable Windows 8 setup on a flash drive. Unfortunately, the setup is unable to locate my SSD so that I can wipe it and install Windows on it. I have read your tutorial and the rest of this thread, but can't figure out what to do!

    The laptop is an Acer Aspire S7-392-6832. I found what seems to be the correct driver on Acer's website (my SNID is 32400966420): "SATA AHCI Driver" version 12.6.0.1033 by Intel, but when I put it (it's called SetupRST.exe) onto a separate flash drive and browse it during the setup as per your instructions, the setup definitely does not see it even when I uncheck the "Hide..." option. Do I have the wrong driver? What's curious is the fact that when I check out the SSD (Intel Raid 0 Volume) in the device manager the driver is version 6.2.9200.16384 from 6/21/2006! And "provided" by Microsoft.

    I feel I am completely missing something. This is my first experience with W8 and my first new laptop in 6+ years. I would really appreciate any help.

    EDIT: As a side note, are there going to be any issues with trying to install a retail version of W8 when my laptop came with Acer's OEM version (which I believe is embedded in the BIOS and will be used to try to validate my clean installation)? I don't want to end up just bricking my laptop after clearing the partitions during the W8 setup...

    Where do you buy your Windows 8 x64 DVD from?

    I received the .ISO file for Windows 8 x64 (build 9200) from a developer friend of mine who has assured me that it contains an untouched RTM version. Needless to say I am not too keen on buying Windows again just to do a clean install.

    See what I wrote in my previous post.

    You need to select an *.inf file when it asks a driver (exe's will not work).
    Try to extract (with 7-Zip for instance) the exe to a folder and see if it's extractable: look for inf files; copy the entire folder to usb.
    If the exe is not extractable (hope it is) you'll need to get a zip containing the driver to extract from somewhere (Intel most likely).
    If it's the right driver, now it will work.

    Good luck

    @Qriztofer
    It's confirmed: you can extract the exe with 7-Zip since it's a packed installer, you need to keep extracting (the x64 version with 'open inside' option until you get to a folder called 'x64' in drivers.cab).

    extractions path:
    SetupRST.exe -> RST_x64.msi -> drivers.cab -> x64 -> iaStorAc.inf

    Copy the x64 folder to the usb stick and when asked for driver select the contained inf I mentioned.
