System Image - Create in Windows 8

  1. #240

I use Windows System Image Backup to save to an external HDD, that is unplugged most of the time. This is part of my last ditch defense against Ransomware and anything else that is nasty enough to infect/encrypt/otherwise spoil everything that is normally accessible.

Is it possible to restore from a USB connected drive using Windows 8.1 System Image Restore from advanced startup options? I only ask because I have had USB devices (keyboards and thumb drives) not work for me before in situations where no OS is loaded.

    Hello Yu Gnomi,

If that's where you originally save the system image to, then yes if your motherboard is also set to recognize USB devices at boot.

Is there a UEFI/BIOS setting I should check?

Usually, it's set to see USB devices at boot by default.

Since each motherboard has different UEFI settings, it'll be hard to give exact steps, but you should see it listed in the settings as something like "Legacy USB", or just USB at boot.

Looking into my motherboard manual, all of the USB features are enabled by default, including 'Legacy USB.' So unless I goofed with that setting, which is possible, everything should work. Thank you for your guidance

You can test it without actually doing a restore. Just go into the Restoration dialog and see if it detects the images. Then cancel the process.

You can, and indeed should - it is far more than most people do. However actually restoring is a better test (as I found out to my cost when I made my system image on a bit-lockered drive and it didn't work...)

Wait for a rainy day and just backup and restore - you'll get a free disk defragmentation into the bargain.

    Windows 8.1 update 1

I have saved a new image using Macrium Reflect, but first of all I had to update 'Macrium Reflect' and the 'Windows PE file'.

Because I have updated the above, do I have to make a new 'Macrium Rescue cd'?

    Thanks
