System Image - Create in Windows 8

Hello guys, I just wanted to ask some questions regarding system image backup.

Is it possible to create a System Image Backup on a usb-flash drive? I formatted a 32gb flash drive (NTFS) but I can't proceed as it says that the drive is not a valid backup location. I want to backup my fresh-installed Win 8.1 Pro 64bit system that is ~16gb (drivers, tweaks and essential programs included) on it.

Maybe there is a 3rd-party program that will work in my case.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello CyberMarco,

It has my 60GB USB 3.0 flash drive available to select to do a system image with, but it warns that the USB may not be large enough.

I just inserted a random usb to show you what I get. It's NTFS formatted.

Most likely it's due to the USB flash drive not being large enough. If you have one at least 60GB in size, give it a try.

Just created my first Windows 8.1 system image to an external hard drive. It created a folder (WindowsImageBackup) on the external hard drive. My question is can I rename it so that I know what PC it belongs to? I plan on creating multiple images for several people and I want to make sure that if one is needed, I know which one to restore with. Also, if I rename one, do I need to rename it back to what it was before I do a restore? I read the tutorial, but not sure about this.

    Hello Copiman,

If you rename it, you will just need to rename it back to it's original name before being able to restore it.

However, you don't need to rename it. Inside that folder, each PC will have it's own folder with the computer's name.

Thanks Brink. I did the second system image and it did exactly what you said (not that I doubted you for a minute). It named its folder the name of the PC. I just need to watch out for PCs having the same name and all will be good.

I do however have another question. I read in a tutorial about creating system repair disk. I understand that you have to have system repair disk to restore the image back to the PC. Also that if you have 8.1, you have to crate it on a USB. I will probably have many images stored for friends. Do I need to make one for each PC or is it that I need to make one for each OS? I guess what I'm saying is that lets say I have 3 images from 3 PCs all running 8.1 64-bit. Would I need just one system repair on a USB or 3 USBs?

Among other options, you could use either retail installation media, a system repair disc, or recovery drive to do a system image recovery from.

Since they are all 64-bit Windows, you could use the same 64-bit system recovery drive on all three.

Thanks again. Its good to know I can create one from my PC and use it on another PC of the same OS. I went ahead and made one from their PC. That way I'll have one in my USB case, just in case. Thanks again Brink, you have been extremely helpful.
