Windows System image GUI is back in 8.1 rtm. Hidden at the bottom of control panel>file history. Now you see it , now you don't.

    Hey Simon,

That's great news. What build of 8.1 is that in?

It's not in my Windows 8.1 Enterprise preview build 9431 yet.

It is the RTM, so looks like it will be there in the october final/whatever they are going to call it.

I am still considering the move to win 8.1. I see in your tutorial you say Win 8.1 can create an image to a separate internal hard drive. Will it also image to a separate partition on the system hard drive? Thanks

    Hello Vincenzo,

As long as you did not move say your user folders or page file to the partition to make it to be considered a system drive, then yes you will be able to.

However, it's recommended to save a system image to a separate hard drive instead to be able to recover Windows in case your hard drive should fail. If you have the system image on the same hard drive as Windows, then you're completely out of luck if the hard drive fails.

Thanks Brink. I do make a copy of the image on an external hard drive, but I tend to restore my images fairly frequently so I like to keep them handy. And I do keep the user shell folders (Docs, Pictures, etc) on the partition, but I've not had any problems imaging there with the old Windows 7 File Recovery utility. Do you expect Win 8.1 File History will have a problem with it? Thanks

Normally, Windows will not allow you to save a system image to a partition/drive that is considered to be a system drive since it's included in the system image by default. If you moved your user folders to that partition, then it should be considered a system drive.
