Correct. It would be best to create and save the system image to a separate or external hard drive.

After just having to re-load windows from a SSD failure. I am looking into backing up an image and had a couple of questions.

The ssd requires special drivers to be loaded prior to windows install. I assume I have to get these built into the backup so I can perform a recovery. Are there any quick links to info on the subject?

Once I get my backup completed how would I test it without over writting my current OS? I only have the one ssd I could remove and test to a different drive but that wouldn't tell me I have everything needed to get back to the ssd.

    Hello yyzdnl,

At step 7 in the System Image Recovery process of the tutorial below, you will be able to click/tap on the Install drivers button to load the drivers for the SSD if needed so that it will be seen afterwards.

    Hi Brink,
Thanks for this tutorial. I just finished making an image of my Win 8 (thru Windows 7 File Recovery) and my Win 7 (using Macrium). Now how do I check if the images I created are good?
    Thanks!

I suppose you could disconnect all hard drives except the one the system image is saved on, pop in a blank hard drive, and see if it will successfully do a system image recovery to the blank hard drive.

This way you will not mess up your current installation. Afterwards, you could just remove the restored to drive, and connect your others back to be back right where you left off at.

    Hello asus,

The System Image feature is currently available in all editions of Windows 8 for now.

It appears that when the Windows Blue update is released in the rumored June, Windows Backup and System Image will be removed in all editions of Windows 8.

And replaced with what? I'm sure MS is not going to remove a feature without replacing it with something that 3rd party developers can make a fortune off of. Not their style. Look at Windows Defender.

Unfortunately, there's no fool proof way of making sure a backup works until actually trying to restore it.
