    Hello drugo,

Changing the name of a user account only changes the name that is displayed on the Welcome (sign in/log on) and Start screens for that user account, and no where else. The original name of the account will always display in the other locations.

The only true way to fully rename a user account is to create a new account with the name wanted instead, and delete the old account.

Nothing will happen to the installed programs, but you will loose your settings, need to create new shortcuts of them, and/or pin them where you like again.

If the old account is a Microsoft account, then you will need to switch the new local account to the same Microsoft account after deleting the old account.
In addition, be sure to make the new account an administrator type first while still signed in to your old account.

So is this why MS Office file properties, (i.e. Author, Last saved by) does not equal the currently displayed Username?

Hello Warship, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yep, it'll use the original name of the account for file properties.

I always recommend that the best way to change the user name of an account would be to create a new account to use with the name instead, and delete the old account. This way the name will be the same everywhere.

Thanks for the welcoming and quick reply.
I've only had this laptop a few months and it's more for convenience than anything else.
I also have an XP, Vista and W7 machines. This is my 1st, maybe last, W8.
MS can be such a PITA!
I'm already certain that this forum, more particularly your posts, will be very helpful.
So here I go... back to square one. At least some of the learning curve is done.
    Thanks so much again!

    You're welcome.

If you used a Microsoft account and have synced your settings, then you could switch it to a local account first. Afterwards, create a new Microsoft account on the PC with the same Microsoft account as the old account was. This way your synced settings will be automatically restored.

How to remove old account settings and preferences to new

    Hello Brink,

I have some questions for you.

    1. I use Windows 8.1 as my OS. I asked the shopkeeper to install it on my notebook, unfortunately he typed my name (as original username/administrator account) wrong. I have used this notebook for about two months and just recently wanted to use my correct name in the user folder, so I have added a new account with my correct name. The problem is how to remove all my data, settings, and preferences from my old account to this new account?

    2. When I added a new account account by following your instructions in this thread: User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8 , I created a Microsoft account not just a local account as you suggested (the consequence was the name in the folder is my email not my name ). But I have cancelled the email verification by clicking the cancellation request. Can I still make a Microsoft account with same email address in the future?

Hello Zammiy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The user name for a Microsoft account will be your email address.

Yes, you will be able to create a new Microsoft account using the same email address, but you would first need to remove any other Microsoft account on the computer using that same email address. You won't be able to have two Microsoft accounts using the same email address on the same computer. If needed you could switch your current Microsoft account to local account, then be able to create a new Microsoft account.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn
