Restore Default Program Associations (NO DOWNLOADS!!! :D )

    HEY EVERYONE!
If you can't restore the default program associations because of insufficient administrator privileges, there's ANOTHER way without downloading anything, simple too! Here's what to do: Drag your mouse to the lower left-hand corner, and right click the Start menu. find control panel, in the bottom group of applications, and go into it. From there, click on the WORD "Programs" from the control panel home. You can either click the WORDS "Default Programs" (And see a detailed description of each option) or just click the option straightaway if you know what they'll do. Then, you can "Set your default programs," a list of a few programs, and what you programs that will open with them. You can also go to "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program," which I'm assuming this is why you're here, a MASSIVE list with many programs; just be sure to scroll down to find the right one. Lastly, you can "Change AutoPlay settings" & "Set program access and computer defaults," the last one requiring administrator privileges, though. Hope I helped anyone who needed it as much as me and more!

Hello Dendrit, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm sorry, but .cfg files are not listed by default in Windows.

Was it originally set to be opened by a program, or not associated with any program?

    Hi!

Thank you, yes it was originally not associated with any programs. I wanted to change some values in it, but as I said, I accidentally saved it as open in notepad.

In that case, you could use Option One in the tutorial below to unassociated .cfg files to restore it back to how it was.

    Hey,
Long time reader of these forums, definitely have found some great tips to optimize my system.

I'm wondering if the default file for Windows Journal, .jnt, files could be uploaded. I was messing around the other day and now anytime I try to re-associate the file type with Windows Journal through the control panel, the set associations window freezes.

    Thanks!

Hey Brink, could you please add the .wma file extension as well? Thanks for your help!

For some reason, the file extensions that are associated with the modern Music app (mp3, wma, wav) gives this ugly icon (see below). Hope to fix it by resetting the association.
