    If you haven't already, try the tutorial again to see if it may be able to restore the default association for .exe files.

    If not, then you might try an older restore point if available.

    It wouldn't hurt to do a full scan of you system with an AV program or Windows Defender to help make sure it's clean.

    thank you for the following list and the .reg files; I don't know how I lost contact with .exe but I did. this fixed that.

    I downloaded the package.reg file everything went as the tut said when I restarted it nothing changed. I did this several times double clicking and right clicking using the merge option. The program that it open with now is notepad if that matters.

How can I change file type associations in Windows 8? For example .jpg files open in Photos app, fine, but when I right-click and choose "edit" Paint opens up. I want to change it from Paint to Photoshop and there seems to be no way to do that. In Windows 7 I used Creative Elements Power...
It seems to me that windows 8 is fragile as to file extensions and changing default programs. Therefore, I want to save all file associations in the registry and be able to undo any mistakes I could make. Any ideas?
