How to Hide or Show Data Usage for Wireless Networks in Windows 8 and 8.1

    information   Information
This will show you how to hide or show the counters that provide real time local data usage estimates for Wi-Fi and mobile broadband network connections in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

This is not available for a wired network connection.

The local counters keep track of the amount of data used on each individual wireless network type so you don’t have to. When the counter is set to show, you can reset the counter whenever you want, which may be useful if you want to monitor your usage month-to-month or even within a session. Although you should think of the local data counters as a quick way to determine your usage, they are not a substitute for what mobile operators (ex: AT&T, Verizon, etc...) report as their usage, which may vary slightly, and should be available in the operator’s metro app.

    Hello,

I don't have some options and menu... I mean you have them in the screenshots but I don't
My windows version is Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64-bit

Please take a look to the attachments
For example in step 6 there is no air plane mode or in 7 View connection properties or turn sharing on or off... Actually I can't right click on none of the connections (Wire connection or LAN ) nothing happening....
IS it because I have Undefined Network and its limited ?! Everything is WORK fine. I have a 2 on-board LAN on my motherboard and one USB wireless devices and its attached to this PC.
So I have 3 internet line (ADSL) from 3 different provider.
So could you please explain why i miss somethings and some options ?!

Hello gigimon, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Only wireless or VPN networks will have right click options available for them.

The "Turn sharing on or off" and "View connection properties" options are only in Windows 8, and no longer listed in Windows 8.1 Update. In Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update, you can use this below for them instead.

The Airplane Mode option will only be available on portable PCs, and not on a desktop PC.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Windows 8.1

I understand how to show and hide the data usage indicator, but I'm still a bit confused about what it's actually showing me.

I have several devices on my network including one laptop running Windows 8.1. I also have a Windows 7 desktop, a Roku hooked to a TV, a smart phone and a tablet.

So, is the usage indicator showing me total usage through my router for my entire home network, or is it showing usage over the network only by that one Windows 8.1 laptop?
