Startup Items - Manage in Windows 8

negative, just standard privileges--from what I can tell. I can even double-click the shortcuts that I put in the ProgramData startup folder and they run successfully. I also tried checking the "Run as an administrator" on the RealTemp shortcut. The taskmanager shortcut or .exe don't have the compatibility tab.

I tried another .exe, for ms word. That one launches successfully in both startup folders. I did some more googling and found that other people have had the same problem specifically with task manager. The only way around it for them was through group policy scripts, task scheduler or registry lines. I assume that RealTemp isn't launching for whatever is the same reason. Must be one of those, "you're not a real administrator on your administrator account" issues in Windows 8 that I see creep up every once in a while.

Odd, but at least the other options work.

Thank you for this. I have to install a program for work. When I installed it once before, it wouldn't let me change the folder that it installed in so every time I started my computer, that program started. I have to reinstall it again tomorrow. How can I change the folder it gets installed in so that doesn't happen again? The other issue I had was after I installed the program, every time I started the computer, the help pdf file for that program (it is a lousy psych test grade program I have to use for work) opened and I would have to close it to then use my computer. I want to prevent that from happening! Please help, or direct me to a tutorial that can help me (I will keep looking too).

Again, thank you so much for this tutorial, it has helped a lot.

    Hello Mabelandbess,

Unless the program gives you an option during it's installation to specify where you want to install it to, there's not going to be a way.

As for the .pdf file opening at startup, you could see if it may be listed to run at startup at any of the startup locations in this tutorial. If it is, then you can disable or delete it to stop it.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Thank you

Thank you for the help. I am going to have to wait because my brand new dell computer is now having to be completely replaced after having 2 new motherboards and 1 new hard drive installed plus 5 days of my life on hold. The new one should come in 2 weeks and hopefully works. We've had 8 dell computers and this is the only one we've had problems with, so disappointing. Anyway I will be using your tutorial as soon as it arrives! Thank you!

Hello Ahriman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Is this for a program that runs elevated (Run as administrator)?

Please post some screenshots showing how you added this program to run at startup to see if it may help reveal what the issue may be.

    Ahriman,

This looks like it needs to run elevated. Try using the tutorial below to create a task for an elevated shortcut of this script file. When you get to step 23 in the tutorial below, use the "run at startup as a task" option to create another task to run the elevated shortcut.
