Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 - Power Off and On

How to Power Off and On Windows Phone 8 and 8.1

information   Information
If your Windows Phone stops working or responding in the way you're used to, you can quickly restart it to hopefully get back on track. You can restart your phone by powering it off, and turning it back on afterwards.

You may also want to turn off your Windows phone as needed. For example, before entering a court room.

This tutorial will show you how to completely turn off and turn back on your Windows Phone 8 or 8.1 phone.

Note   Note
If the phone is currently charging, it will not power off. It will only restart.

If the phone is powered off and then started to charge, it will automatically power back up (turn on).

OPTION ONE

To Power Off Windows Phone 8 and 8.1

1. Press and hold on the Power button until you see Slide down to power off. (see screenshot below)

2. Slide or flick down the Slide down to power off screen. (see screenshot below)

3. The phone will now say goodbye as it powers off. (see screenshot below)

OPTION TWO

To Power On Windows Phone 8 and 8.1

1. Press and hold on the Power button until the phone vibrates once. (see screenshot below)

2. The phone will now restart and turn on.
Note   Note
If this doesn’t work to turn on your phone, try one of the following options:

Note   Note

  • Press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time until you feel a vibration (about 10–15 seconds). Your phone will restart automatically.

    Note   Note

    • Sometimes your phone will vibrate right away when you press the Volume Down button and Power button buttons—this is probably due to your ringer changing to Vibrate. Wait to release the buttons until a second vibration after 10–15 seconds.
    • If you don't let go of the Volume Down button and Power button buttons right after the vibration at 10–15 seconds, your phone may show a black startup screen and not restart normally. If this happens, just repeat the button combo to try again.
    • Not all phones support the ability to restart your phone this way, so check with your phone's manufacturer to find out how to force a restart.

  • If your phone has a replaceable battery, remove and reinsert the battery located under your phone’s back panel. Press the Power button to turn on your phone again.

That's it,
Shawn

Hi Shawn. You may want to tweak this tutorial.

Nokia Lumia 1520 with 8.1 official release.

I just learned today that the phone will not power off when plugged into a charger. It will only reboot. I hardly ever power down my phone, but I could swear that wasn't true back when running 8.

Also, when it's powered off and then plugging in a charger, the phone will boot up. I think that's new also.

Thank you for reminding me Tony. It looks like I for to add that as a note.

That's also how my Lumia 1520 behaved before the update.
