Search in Windows 8

    Common Sense, not so common...perhaps?

    Hello,

Question; wouldn't it have made more sense to retain the original 'Search' feature in WinXP? It works flawlessly, always. One may select 'All Files and Folders,' then name at least part of the file/folder and proceed to directing the search in a specific area, all in two clicks. See 2 screenshots below. I cannot, even in a most sober state, understand why MSFT would tamper with their previous intuitive feature; it was and still is a Home Run. Sorry for the crude photos (Win7/8 have the snazzy 'clip' feature) as WinXP 'print screen' cannot capture as a .jpg or other.

    Thank You,
    Caoimhin

Hello Caoimhin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could also use this below instead to get closer to that.

Either I'm doing something wrong or I have something setwrong, but this won't work for me. I can find a file that I made instantly. Butwhen I try to find a file in the root directory or the Windows directory, or anyother file, it comes up with the same answer which is: "No files matched your search. I went to FolderOptions/Search and checked all the boxes. I then unchecked the box which says,"Don't use the index....". That did not help. I think that I'm doing everything right, but apparently I'm not.

    Hello Frank,

You might see if rebuilding the index may help.

Thanks, Brink--rebuilding the index took care of it. One nice thing about having a problem is that it's a good feeling when a solution is found. It reminds me of a story I heard years ago.
A little boy had a rubber band wrapped around his head. He said to a friend on his, "Wow, this rubber band sure hurts my nose the way I have it wrapped around my head." His friend said, "Then why did you wrap it around your head?" The boy responded, "Because it feels so good when I take it off!" That's a little bit like having a problem. It feels good when you find a solution.

    That's great news Frank.

    Hi Shawn,
Thanks for the welcome and attached link; very kind of you. I'll give it a peek. My PC's are all back on WinXP now, which works wonderfully. I am sad that Win7/8 require work-arounds to the most basic features we've all come to use daily...quickly and efficiently. I can't help but think MSFT is trying to go the way of Apple (dumbing down to the lowest common denominator, with all respect), which is most unfortunate for us lot that have been with them since the 3.0 (16bit) or 3.1x days (Janus, for those of you who remember this)...

Nothing is perfect, we all know this. I do wish MSFT would release an OS that is geared to the wonderful evolution of their prior OS's, ending with XP... Of course some of the features in Win7/8 are wonderful, but all said, they still do not enable me to be as productive as I am on XP.

As a side note, and completely off topic: I purchased two Apple machines in the last year; (1) iMac and (1) Mac Pro as I'm a lifelong studio musician/recordist...blah-blah. Most in the music business swear by Macs...so with great apprehension I dove in, partly as I was so disgusted with Win7. I can tell you whole heartedly that my WinXP PC walks all over both of them, and they're both buffed-out with max RAM, Procs et al. The kicker is that I've come to find out just how proprietary Apple really is...and that I cannot get my beautiful Samsung (ha haa...there's a joke in that alone!) HDMI HDTV to play nice with my Mac Pro, to be able to utilize an HD resolution. Why? Dig this. Apple are the ones that produce/supply the DRIVERS for the third party Vid Cards (ATI Radeon in this case)...so it is in Apple's best interest (wink-wink) for them NOT to produce drivers to play nice with others, other than their $1k 27" LED monitor... Have to laugh. My Samsung HDMI HDTV is 40" of stunning 1080p HD resolution... Oh well...like we all know, it's not a perfect world...but I do enjoy the blinding irony clearly on display; thanks Apple. ;-)

Peace, and thanks for the time you took to help out; much appreciated. PC guys RULE; always have, always will!

    My Best,
    Caoimhin

    Amen to that Caoimhin.

It seems everything is moving towards the mobile and touch market. I just wish that they don't forget about us desktop jocks where the real work gets done.
