Hello Izzy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Are you trying to do this in your Pictures library? If so, then that's why since all folders share the same view in a library.

Instead, see how it works in your say "C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures" folder.

If this is not the issue, then please provide more details.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

You're a mad genius Mr. Shawn! I did as you told me and it worked beautifully. I am very satisfied. Thank you very much.

Ok now I have another question re-guarding the same problem with the photos. I can take the folder with photos out and re-arrange them and it works great, but when I place them back into from I got them (library>pictures) they go back to the way they were beforehand;but when I take them out they are as I organized. Any more knowledge oh-great-one?

Sounds like this below from the blue Note box at the top of the tutorial??

When you disable auto arrange, and either unzip a file in a folder, move a folder, or rename a folder, it will refresh and auto arrange the files in that specific folder only after each time you do this. Auto arrange is still disabled for that folder, but you will need to arrange the files back to whatever non-auto arranged order you like again after unzipping a file in a folder, move a folder, or rename a folder.

Hello W8 Forums. This is my first post so please forgive any errors.
Thanks Brink for the Auto Arrange fix. I work, much of the time, with masses of reference pictures, and not being able to drag them around within a folder was becoming a deal-breaker for me and W8!

I do still have the problem of the system leaving gaps when files are dragged, and this can sometimes be severe because it can move some images OFF SCREEN unless I notice the horizontal slide bar has appeared and there is more to see. Has this gap problem been fixed yet, and if so can you please guide me to where it gives the solution? Thanks again.

Hello Yarders, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm afraid that feature is part of auto arrange. When you disable auto arrange, files get copied over the same way and can go over like that if copied near the border. Luckily you could scroll over and move them to how you want them afterwards.

The only solution would be to enable auto arrange for only that folder again.

To enable or disable auto arrange for a specific folder, you can right click or press and hold on an empty area in the folder, click/tap on View, then click/tap on Auto arrange to uncheck (disable) or check (enable) it for that specific folder.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I switched directly to W8 from XP Pro, which did fill the gaps in this situation - odd that this feature, so sane and helpful, was ditched. I guess we always imagine that every new OP will build on the best and most convenient of previous versions; frankly, I found it unbelievable that these core features of file handling (particularly image files) were missing.

Shall be keeping track of any relevant threads here that I can find, and hope for some change in the future. BTW, what key words would you recommend when searching for such info here? Not sure how to describe the problem in the proper terms.

    All the best,
    Y

The key words would be "auto arrange in Windows Explorer".

Did doing what I posted above help any?

Oh for sure it did; I can now drag files to arrange them in the order that I need without renaming scores of files, but dragging a file still leaves a gap. I guess I'm just going to have to develop a routine of dragging which handles the gaps better; I've only been able to rearrange thumbnails by dragging for a day (since I found your fix) and I need to work on a better technique - one that minimizes gaps. If anything useful comes out of that, I'll post it here.

It may be of interest to others if I take some screen captures to explain the problem more clearly - I'll do that when I have a moment, and when I learn how to post pictures here.

Disable auto-assort in Performance & Maintenance
It seems that, as in W7, you have to make changes to disable auto-assort, so files can be moved to desired position in a folder. Does anyone know if the procedure is the same as W7 please? I know Google will find that but does't say for W8.
