Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable in Windows 8
    Hello Delicate,

I'm not sure how the disable auto arrange will work if you also used disable full row select. Disable full row select has a few quirks in Windows 8 that may be why you are seeing this issue. As a test, undo the disable full row select, and try with only disable auto arrange to see how it works afterwards.

Normally, if you only used disable auto arrange:

To enable or disable auto arrange for a specific folder, you can right click or press and hold on an empty area in the folder, click/tap on View, then click/tap on Auto arrange to uncheck (disable) or check (enable) it for that specific folder.

The Auto arrange and Align to grid options, when you right click or press and hold on an empty area in the folder and click on View, are only available (not grayed out) while using the Extra Large Icons, Large Icons, Medium Icons, Small Icons, and Tiles folder view.

Hello, wonder if you can resolve my total confusion. Just had to replace my XP PC with W8 and I really hate this auto arrange. Having difficulties just getting to grips with W8!
When I look at this tutorial, thought this was the answer to my problem:
    https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4299-windows-explorer-auto-arrange-disable-windows-8-a.html
but I am even more confused. It says: “While this tutorial will allow you to disable auto arrange in the Libraries folder itself, it will not disable auto arrange in any of the other library folders (ex: Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos)”.
Hence my total confusion, can you only re-arrange the folders order? What I want to do is take a document folder I created, with ‘x’ photos in it, re-arrange them in the order I want and then rename/number them. Seems like there’s ‘hundreds’ of ways to sort/arrange, except for turning the thing off.
Don’t want to go down the .bat route if it is not going to achieve this.
    Thanks for any help.

Hello F10, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Luckily, if you don't like how disabling auto arrange works, Option Two will always reset you back to default again.

That just means that you will be able to arrange the library folders how you like in the Libraries folder how you like, but you will not be able to arrange files/folders how you like inside each library folder.

You will be able to arrange files/folders how you like inside all other folders in File Explorer though.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Hello Shawn, many thanks for the reply. If I understand you correctly all I can do is re-arrange the order/position of the folders: Documents, Music,Pictures and Videos in Libraries. However, if I were to put say 50 photos in the Downloads folder, or a new folder I make within this, I could re-arrange these photo files as desired with auto arrange disabled, then rename them to retain this order.
If I ended up with a situation I didn’t like, is there a preference for undoing this i.e. enable.bat or use the restore point I have made.
    Thanks again.

    John,

You couldn't arrange them how you like inside the Documents library since you cannot disable auto arrange in library folders, but you could in your "C:\Users\(username)\My Documents" folder instead.

There's no need to rename anything. When you arrange items how you like in a folder, it will be retained unless you perform an action listed in the blue note box at the top of the tutorial that could reset the order.

You could use the .bat in Option Two to reset to default, or use a system restore to go back to what you had set before.

Hi Shawn. Must confess I just didn’t see it, until the penny finally dropped. Now got shortcuts on my desktop to go C: > Users > My Documents.
    Does exactly what I want.
    Thank you.

Disable auto-assort in Performance & Maintenance
It seems that, as in W7, you have to make changes to disable auto-assort, so files can be moved to desired position in a folder. Does anyone know if the procedure is the same as W7 please? I know Google will find that but does't say for W8.
