Hello Tomek, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I noticed that under the address bar in your File Explorer does not look normal. Do you have a program installed that did that? If so, it could be conflicting with auto arrange not being remembered.

It could indeed be causing it with any customizations it made.

I've activated this Disable Auto-arrange on Windows 8.1 Pro and it does what it's purported to do. However, I'm disappointed in that I cannot save this new arrangement and store/move it in it's new layout. When a file was saved to a USB flash drive, it reverted back to the original format, based on dating. Isn't there some way I can renumber the photos or in some manner maintain their order once I've reorganized them and save them that way permanently?

Thank you, after uninstalling everything works fine.
Can you recommend some program on windows 8.1 that will allow the drop-down menu after pressing start button ?
I do not want metro screen.

You might test the programs in the tutorial below to see if one may play nice with this and have the features you like.

I'm afraid not that I'm aware of. Anything that causes the folder to refresh will also cause the files to auto arrange.

    auto-arrange checkbox missing

i cant find the auto-arrange checkbox. I assume where you're looking at is the "View" tab in "Folder Options which you get to under the "View" menu at the top of Windows Explorer. Can someone help me find it?

Hello manyhat55ink, and welcome to Eight Forums.

That would only be available if you used OPTION ONE in the tutorial. Afterwards, the Auto arrange and Align to grid options, when you right click or press and hold on an empty area in the folder and click on View, are only available (not grayed out) while using the Extra Large Icons, Large Icons, Medium Icons, Small Icons, and Tiles folder view.

    Hope this helps for now,
    Shawn

I tried this with Option one and it didn't work. I can see the auto arrange option and it is not checked, but when I change a filename, it automatically puts in into the list where it belongs. I do see one difference, the list stays at the place where I was instead of switching to the new filenames place (In other words, if the original filename started with an A and I change it to start with a Z, the list stays at the A part of the list instead of switching). Is that limit of the options I can change?

Disable auto-assort in Performance & Maintenance
It seems that, as in W7, you have to make changes to disable auto-assort, so files can be moved to desired position in a folder. Does anyone know if the procedure is the same as W7 please? I know Google will find that but does't say for W8.
