    Windows 8.1

I have installed Windows 8.1 from Dell media and then typed the C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep.exe /audit /reboot @ command prompt

After rebooting, i'm stucked with this message :

Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.

    WTF?

Hi Marvin, welcome to the Eight Forums.

Did you do a clean install of 8.1 or upgrade from 8? The install media, you mention it is "Dell Media". IS it a pure Windows 8.1 install media or does it also include Dell's bloatware?

    Hey Kari!

thank you for your answer. The install media comes from Dell but I didn't see any bloatware. Is there a way to cancel the audit mode and come back to the working state?

    regards

No, there is. If this was a clean install and not an upgrade, I cannot tell why this happened. First time I have ever heard that a simple reboot to Audit Mode fails.

I'm sorry but if you don't have a system image to restore, the only solution is to reinstall.

If I had more information I might be able to find the culprit. For instance what sounds odd is that according to you the only thing you did was to boot from Windows normal mode to Audit Mode with command Sysprep.exe /audit /reboot, which then caused the error message Windows could not complete the installation.

This is very odd; Booting to Audit Mode has nothing to with installation and that error message should in any case not be presented. Reboot to Audit Mode is just a normal reboot where Windows instead of booting to Welcome / Log In screen boots directly to Audit Mode using the built-in administrator login credentials. If sysprep is going to fail for some reason and that error message is presented, it comes only after exiting Audit Mode and booting back to OOBE / Welcome mode.

It would help if you told exactly what you did and in which order.

    Hey Kari

as far as I remember, I installed some drivers and joined the company domain before going to audit mode. I installed no software yet.

    thank you

    From: Sysprep (System Preparation) Overview:

The Sysprep tool runs only if the PC is a member of a workgroup, not a domain.
As this tutorial is meant for private users, not corporate environments where my simple instructions are not needed, I had naturally not even thought to add the warning. If you need to / want to Sysprep again, reinstall Windows, then enter the Audit Mode from installation as told in step 1.1 in this tutorial.

Hi Kari, thanks a bunch for this tutorial. It has served me well for both my PC and Laptop.

I've got just one question: I'm selling my Win8.1 laptop which has a relocated User folder, and of course I must refresh it and delete all my data. Will the User folder stay relocated on the second Hard Disk? Thanks
