    none thanks to you

    Wow, thank you !
    This tutorial ruined my freshly new computer in less than an hour ! Now, it's on its way back to the seller.
    It won't boot now, exactly what I wanted ! This tutorial is so well made.

    This tutorial simply cannot ruin your computer. It is impossible. The worst case scenario is you have to reinstall Windows. If you read this thread through, errors in sysprepping Windows have usually been user's own fault, either an error in answer file script or something else similar, easily fixed small errors. When fixed, the method has worked.

    If your knowledge is not enough to simply reinstall Windows if it does no longer work, you shouldn't be doing advanced stuff as described in this tutorial.

    I am very sorry you had to send your computer to reseller but it is absolutely sure not because of this tutorial. Any physical damage to your computer is caused by something else you yourself has done. Running a script to change one value in Windows variables is not and could not even in theory be guilty in damaging your computer.

    No luck for me. I started with a clean install of Windows 8 x64 and newly formatted data drive. The Users and ProgramData folder were successfully moved to the from C: to D:, but none of the Modern Apps installed. All that was there was the Marketplace and it wouldn't open. I also could not open up PC Settings from Modern interface.

    Hi Ajl7519, welcome to the Seven Forums.

    Throughout this thread I have warned against moving the ProgramData folder. I have also told it makes Windows Store and Apps non-functioning, and that PC Settings will not work if ProgramData is moved.

    Why on earth did you move ProgramData? I even took it away from the tutorial because earlier when it was in tutorial with big red warning about it making Store and Apps worthless, people still tried it and came later here to complain when Apps didn't work.

    OK, now you have two choices. First, you could try if the method told in this post works for you. If not, you need to reinstall NOT moving ProgramData.

    I can simply not understand why people keep doing something they have been warned not to do?

    Users still on C

    EDIT: Apparently the Users folder does not move until after Audit mode is concluded. I finally just gave up and rebooted into the OOBE. This promptly moved everything over to my HDD.

    After following the tutorial, I still have a c:\Users folder and do not have a f:\Users folder.

    C is my SSD, F is my HDD and D is my DVD.
    I am working with a clean install of Win 8 Pro 64.
    I have placed relocate.xml at f:\relocate.xml. Its contents are as follows:
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
    <settings pass="oobeSystem">
    <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="Error" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <FolderLocations>
    <ProfilesDirectory>f:\Users</ProfilesDirectory>
    </FolderLocations>
    </component>
    </settings>
    <cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:D:/sources/install.wim#Windows 8 Pro" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
    </unattend>
    I ran the sysprep command, the computer looked like it was working, even rebooted and then when I was presented with the Administrator login, I saw that the Users folder had not moved. I presume that it is supposed to move before I exit Audit mode.

    C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther\setupact.txt has the following lines about the run:

    I will continue trying to fix this on my own and update if I find a resolution but I would greatly appreciate any advice if you can see where this is going wrong.

    Hi Trs4ece, welcome to the Eight Forums.

    There's nothing to fix.

    I added this to tutorial, I have it on the Seven Forums tutorial for relocating user folders but apparently have not written it here:

    information   Information
    Please notice that user profile folder (Users) and its subfolders are only moved after you exit the Audit Mode and boot first time to OOBE (Welcome) mode. Nothing will be moved in Audit Mode, sysprep is only preparing folders to be moved when finally making an OOBE boot.

    It is totally normal, exactly as it should be not to see the new Users folder on new location when returning to Audit Mode after sysprepping. Exit Audit Mode, boot to OOBE, and you will find your Users folder on new location.

    Do not delete the original folder Users on C: even if you notice it is totally empty. It will remain empty but system needs it there.

    To my defense this is mentioned several times in this thread but there seem always to be new readers who have not read all available information.

    EDIT:

    After posting the above and going to tutorial to add the relevant information there, I noticed I had not forgotten to tell this peace of information but apparently you did not read the whole tutorial! It has been there all the time, so I would like to recommend people to read the whole tutorial.

    This can be found at the end of the tutorial:
    Notice that Users (and ProgramData) are not created on or moved to new location when you return to Audit Mode after running sysprep. Relocation will first happen when you exit Audit Mode and boot to OOBE (Welcome) mode to continue installation. If done on an existing system the first OOBE boot after sysprepping can take quite a long time, depending on how big those folders are that sysprep is physically moving to new location.

    Remember also that when you create a new user profile the user folders are not created before the new user logs in first time.

    I followed this tutorial on my desktop for Windows 7 with great success. My new laptop came with Windows 8 and I'd like to do the same, but the SSD that I'd like to install the OS on is only 16 GB and Microsoft says at least 20 GB is required. Can I go ahead and install it or do I need to hold off until I get a bigger SSD drive?

    Hi Monumental, welcome to the Eight Forums.

    Honestly, forget Windows 8 for now. Even if you got somehow squeezed it to that 16GB drive, it would be close to useless. Windows simply needs some free space on HD to function, your drive is really too small.

    As far as I know Windows refuses to start installation on drives so small.

    Ok, that's what I was afraid of. I thought when I ordered it with a SSD drive that the OS would come installed on that drive, but it's on the HDD. I called tech support and they said that the OS should be caching to the SSD to improve performance but I don't see any files that would indicate that's happening. Are there any settings to have Windows 8 use the SSD to increase performance? Thanks for the quick reply.

    Hi Kari,

    thank you for your guide. I have not yet started the procedure, but have a question. I will have a new laptop without OS. That means I will do the clean installation. The laptop has an existing HDD and I will add an additional SSD which will work as OS drive. Naturally, I want the <USER> folder to be on the normal HDD.

    You wrote:

    If you donít have a second internal hard disk or you have not created and formatted an extra partition on your system disk, you need first to create one. Notice that the drive or partition must not be empty, but especially if relocating on an existing installation it must be big enough to allow Users and ProgramData to be moved there. When we sysprep with answer file on next step these two folders are physically moved to new location.
    The bold part is my question: I understand that the HDD has to be formatted properly. But does it have to be not empty also? Does that mean I'll have to move random files unto it beforehand?
