“Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600" Watermark - Remove

How to Remove “Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600" Watermark from Desktop

information   Information
This tutorial will show you how to remove the Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600 type watermark from the lower right corner of your desktop with or without turning off test mode in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

If you have an edition (ex: Pro, or Enterprise) of Windows 8/8.1 installed other than the core edition, then the watermark message will also include the edition.

  • Test Mode Windows 8 Build 9200
  • Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9490
  • (core) Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600
  • (Pro) Test Mode Windows 8.1 Pro Build 9600
  • (Enterprise) Test Mode Windows 8.1 Enterprise Build 9600

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
According to Microsoft, the test mode watermark can appear if the test signing mode is started on the computer. This test mode may occur if an application whose drivers are not digitally signed by Microsoft is installed and still in the test phase. Microsoft added test mode to Windows so that users can test programs without having to provide an authentication certificate.

The TESTSIGNING boot configuration option determines whether Windows Vista and later versions of Windows will load any type of test-signed kernel-mode code. This option is not set by default, which means test-signed kernel-mode drivers will not load by default on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and later versions of Windows.

For 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and later versions of Windows, the kernel-mode code signing policy requires that all kernel-mode code have a digital signature. However, in most cases, an unsigned driver can be installed and loaded on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and later versions of Windows.

i wouldn't quite call Remove “Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600" Watermark from Desktop removing it more so turning off test mode or putting the system in standard boot with with driver signage enabled
rather then hiding it from the desktop or removing it

i thought that this would be a update since its from may of 2014

as there are some like me how want or need test mode this is a no go.
i have looked and theres a few programs that does just that but doing so removes the string out the whole OS so i read

No, not really. I just followed your procedure to the letter 3 times and the watermark is still present. I'm not trying to be ugly, but your solution doesn't work.

Sorry friend.

Obviously turning off Test Mode will remove the Test Watermark. LOL!!!
Some of us are in Test Mode because we want to be, though.

People who come to this page want to know how to remove the Test watermark while still remaining in Test Mode.

Solution if you want to remain in Test Mode:
Try "My WCP Watermark Editor". It has a setting for removing the Test Mode Watermark. Seek and ye shall find.

Confirmed working.

Your solution does not work for me, as far as I can tell. I have just rebooted, and here is the output of bcdedit.exe within an elevated cmd prompt:

I assume that "testsigning No" means that I'm not in test mode. And yet:

In the lower right-hand corner of my (two) screens I see the three lines of text:
Test Mode
Windows 8.1 Pro
Build 9600

Quite frankly, I'm more interested in getting my machine actually out of Test Mode (or some other weird state it's in) than I am in "just" getting rid of the watermark. In particular, I would rather NOT "just" use that watermark program to make my desktop pretty, if in fact my OS installation remains in some wacko condition inside. I assume that I could go back to some restore point (yes?), but I'd rather know what the **** going on (and fix it). Thanks!

My apologies in advance if I've not understood something and am wasting your time.

Scott

<possible red herring>
Perhaps I should add that I'm in the middle of doing something just slightly violent to my installation: it's a Thinkpad T420 and I'm trying to install an eGPU. The thing is connected via a half-size mini-PCI-Express card which sits in the slot underneath the keyboard that normally contains an Intel Centrino Wireless 1000 Wifi Card. Along the way so far, I've had to flash the T420 with a modded BIOS (but as far as I am aware, it is exactly the current stock Lenovo BIOS (1.46) which is only modified by the removal of its implementation of a whitelist of permitted mini PCI-e cards). The NVidia drivers I'm using are signed, and I don't think I've installed any others, but I wouldn't swear to that). I'm at a stage where I have to cold-start the laptop with the original Wifi mPCI-e card in but press the stupid ThinkVantage button to pause the boot, then hot-swap the cards, then press escape to conitinue booting. I have also had to muck about with dsdt and iasl.exe. I really haven't been doing anything particularly weird to the machine, however.

Hello sbp, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you have testsigning set to be off, you may have a unsigned driver installed that is causing you to still be test mode.

If this just recently happened, then the easiest option would be to do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo it. Otherwise, it'll be a guessing game on which driver could be the cause if that's the case.

1. Is there any way to get Windows to cough up a list of unsigned drivers that are loaded at present? I understand from your answer that there isn't, but I'd like to just get confirmation.
If I go to Device Manager and choose "Show hidden devices" and check one-by-one if the driver is signed, am I guaranteed to find the offending driver? (Do I need to show hidden devices to do this?)

2. This system is one into which I put an SWD driver a week or so ago. I have made **several**system restore points of late. I have 20GB fo disk reserved for System Restore, and according to the System Restore console, I have 20GB reserved of disk space for System Restore of my C: drive, of which I am using about 510MB at present. And yet, when I choose to do a system restore, there is only one single restore point listed. And I see no button for showing other restore points. How can there be 20GB reserved, only 500MB used, and the system has no other restore points?? Could I have done something to make them disappear? This is somewhat distressing to me. The single restore point listed is from yesterday. I'll try it but I doubt it will help.
Also, normally, before I apply a restore point I would create a new restore point, in case I want to rollback the restore. But now I'm worried that if I make a new restore point, the one single one listed will be silently deleted by Windows. Can I protext against this>

with thanks,

scott

Scott,

Q1)
You could use "File Signature Verification" to see if you have any unsigned files to help ID it.

File Signature Verification

Q2) It's hard to say. There's several utility programs out there that have a feature to delete restore points. If you dual boot with another OS, then sometimes it can wipe the restore points each time you start the other OS.

The solution explained in the first part of this discussion does not work for me. I have tried 3 o 4 times. The watermark says: "Test Mode Windows 8.1 Build 9600". I DO NOT want just to delete the watermark, I do want to get out from the text mode. Apparently I am in a test mode after an HP repair on my PC.

Hello Alex, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Are you running OPTION ONE in an elevated command prompt? (right click -> Run as administrator)

If so, then type bcdedit in the elevated command prompt, and press Enter. Afterwards, post the full results to see what the issue may be. :)

What exactly was involved with the HP repair? This may help to ID what happened.

After switching on and off 3-4 times, now the watermak is disappeared. Now the problem seems to be Office: it does not work properly, it seems installed 2 times... I was able to deinstall one of the instances of Office, not the other one :-(

We can create a new thread for the Office issue for us to continue with since it's a separate issue. For now, you might see if using this below to fully uninstall all instances of Office and reinstall the one you wanted may help.

It was Office 2013. I brought the PC to a shop to have it uninstalled. I tried already a device from Microsoft, I have deinstalled it, and now I get an error if I try to reinstall it from my Microsoft Account. I have given up :)

Will keep you informed, thank you.
