User Profile Service failed the sign-in - Fix in Windows 8

    Windows 8.1

I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 loaded on it. When I tried to create a profile using my Windows logon and password, I get the same message and cannot logon, if I try to create a local profile, I still get the same error message, and so far have not been able to create a profile to get Windows to load and let me in. I was finally, after restoring about 15 times, able to find the link to activate the hidden Administrator profile and make that work. I am now able to at least activate Windows and start using it. But I still cannot create any other profiles using my Windows logon or a local user profile. When I look at the regedit and the users, I do not find any users other than the Administrator. Because of that, I cannot use many of the Windows functions at all. What can I do to be able to have a profile created? I have not been able to find an answer as yet to when there is not a profile, only when there is a corrupt one or a backed up one to use.

Hello rbrenth, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In this case, it may be best to refresh Windows.

    Thanks Brink,
I have already done a factory refresh prior to activating the hidden Administrator and getting up and partially running. For some reason, I just cannot get my Windows Login to create the Profile, nor the local. I have had conversations with Dell's software support and the last thing that they had me do was the refresh. Doesn't seem to matter what I do, I cannot get anything to create a profile other than the Administrator.

Odd. Did you already try a reset?

Yes, I did the reset yesterday, and I did the restore many times before that. Nothing seems to allow me to use my Windows user to set up my Profile, nor the local user.

So today I was made aware of a PUP found on my laptop, Win32 Somoto PUP to be exact. I used a full-time scan using avast! and then ran a boot-time scan. After both scans finished, I was signed into a "temporary account", I don't know why, so I used this tutorial on how to fix it:

You've been signed in with a temporary profile - Fix

I did all the steps except I couldn't delete my user profile folder in my C: drive, so I deleted it first from the regedit, which then allowed me to delete the folder. I don't know if this is the cause of my current problem, which is every time I make a new user profile, I keep getting the user profile service failed error. I attempted to refresh my Windows, but at the end of the process, it said that it couldn't complete the refresh. This has been happening with all my attempts at system restoring, or fixing repairs. Have no clue what to do from here. I think I got the PUP out, but now I would like to just create a local account because I'd rather not use the built-in Admin account for everyday business.

Hello Rangers21, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you haven't already, see if you are able to sign in to the built-in Administrator account, and create a new account for you to use instead.

Hey Brink, the built-in Admin account is the one I am using right now. I have no other users other than this one. That is why I want to make a new user, but every time I make one, I keep getting the User Profile Service error.

In that case, you may need to reset Windows.

I guess that is what I have to do .

After I reset Windows, is there anything I have to do? Like put in the Windows disc or download anything? Pretty new to all this troubleshootin' stuff so bear with me.
