This is the 3rd time I've had to do it, the thing to watch out for is that sometimes the error that causes thus dupes the target account into an "administrator.(original user name)-PC" account, which is why the profile service can't locate the files, they get moved into that account.

I had moved the files from the original account folder, and nothing happened, then I noticed the renamed dupe account folder, after copying from there it worked perfect. So always look for a dupe of your account folder
    .
It seems to be what's going on with me (username.username). But I'm not sure where to go from there... Do I search for my files, copy them in the username.username profile and then delete it after creating another profile???

Also, how can I recuperate all my saved passwords and bookmarks from Firefox?

    THanks!

TheAnth, mainly what you are doing is creating a new user account then moving your entire corrupted user account into the new user folder. You have to do this in safe mode logged into admin account. If not, it will cause all kinds of problems.

You basically move every file from the original user folder into the new user including "appdata", just ignore any errors. Finally after the move, delete the hell out of both the original user folder AND the "temp" folder. And it is very important to delete the bak-ed out ProfileList reg entry, as well as the original entry for that profile.

Then after you reboot it will log right in to your new user.

    Windows 10

    Hi all,

I'm hoping someone maybe able to help me, I'm devastated at the thought of losing all my files. Mostly the wedding pics & birth of our son pics etc.

I upgraded to windows 10 from windows 8 and when I got windows 10 on it looked like I had lost my files however I managed to find them in the network section of "this pc", I have spent all night cutting and pasting the files where I wanted them i.e onto my desktop of the administrator user and was relieved to have them back. From there I went online but quickly realised I could not log onto my e-mails due to the keyboard layout being incorrect and it will not allow me to type the @ <-- symbol in. (At the moment I have copied and pasted this @ symbol from the internet)...the only option I thought I had was to go to the control panel and change the language from English (US) to english (UK) so I installed and upgraded this....since then I cannot log into the profile (only temporarly) where all my files are.

As I say I am devastated!!!

I was going to follow your instructions on page 1 but where you say go to C;Users and back-up my files/folders....I still don't see the files or folders I want

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Its now 1:15am here in England and I feel physically sick at the thought of telling my family I have lost everything.

Hello Lee, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could try creating and using a Peppermint Live DVD/USB to boot from and hopefully be able to backup your files.

If successful, I'd recommend doing a clean install of Windows 10 below if you're no able to do the tutorial here to fix the user profile error, and restoring your files back afterwards.

    Hi Brink,

Thanks for the reply. I am now installing the peppermint live software but in the meantime its just occurred to me to check the properties of the old profile name and it shows alot of memory & files under this which gives me hope that the files are still around but hidden from me. Does this help at all?

I really don't know what to start with first.

I have attached a screenshot showing which files are showing from the network/owen-bedroom/users

The profile I am having the issues with (which has all my files) is OwenThomas, the properties show a much larger memory been taken up (approx 17.5gb) whereas my others only show approx 250mb so i am hoping I can save them. However when I click on OwenThomas it is showing no files that I expect to be there and certainly not 17.5gb worth of them.

Can you please advise given this new info. which is the best way to proceed?

I have not attempted the tutorial as once I got to number 2 it stated:

    2. Back up anything that you do not want to lose in the C:\Users\(user-name) profile folder (ex: Brink) of the affected user account to another location. When finished, delete the C:\Users\(user-name) folder.

...however as I don't see my files I don't know how to proceed.

Thanks again for your support.Click image for larger version

I'd wait and see what you have with the Peppermint Live DVD/USB first. This way you will hopefully have a backup of your data before starting to attempt the tutorial.

Oh! It's a Linux. Good tutorial, I just recently switched to Rufus. I used it with Transmac to create a Yosemite installer for an iMac I was working on, I bootcamped windows 8 into it. My first iMac repair, I had to replace the HDD. It was easier than it first appeared, just awkward.

I've seen a few more of these temp profiles pop up in the last week, windows 10 seems to do it a lot.
