How to Turn On or Off to Automatically Close Apps not Responding at Shutdown in Windows

    information   Information
When user processes (tasks) do not end (close) automatically at sign out, restart, or shutdown, the system waits until the process ends on it's own. If the process hasn't ended by the set HungAppTimeout value, the End Task dialog box appears, stating that the processes are not responding to the End Task request and prompts the user to either force sign out/restart/shut down and force close (end task) the non-responding processes OR to cancel sign out/shut down to return to Windows.

The AutoEndTasks value determines whether these non-responding processes get forced closed automatically or not to finish signing out, restarting, or shutting down Windows.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off AutoEndTasks of non-responding processes at shutdown for current or all users in XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

    Hello John,

The AutoEndTasks string value is not there by default, and needs to be added to work.

    Shawn, to avoid overkill:

If I install this do I actually need the WaittoKlllApp, WaittoKillService and HungApp timeouts as well?

    Hello Maggi,

While those settings are related, they are different. It wouldn't hurt to have them set as well for a quicker shut down.

    OK, thanks, will do.

    One question about WaittoKillService though.

I read the tutorial about how to set the time-out on this, but I don't have an entry for this in the registry. Can I just right click and add it, like with the others?

If you like, you could use the .reg file from step 2 in Option One to have it added automatically for you.
