Shawn, AutoEndTasks, HungAppTimeout, and WaitToKillAppTimeout are not on my system. How do I enable them?

    Hello Jesse,

They are not there by default. Using the .reg files in the tutorials will add them for you.

    I'm confused.
How is HungAppTimeout different from WaitToKillAppTimeout?

What I want is for the "force end task" dialog to appear after a short while, and then auto killing the apps after a longer time. So if I'm in a rush to go the computer won't stay on...

I thought I could do this by setting HungAppTimeout to 20 seconds, enabling AutoEndTasks and setting WaitToKillAppTimeout to two minutes or more.

But according to the descriptions on this website AutoEndTasks affects both, so what's the point of having both of them?

    Hello avada,

Those two go hand in hand, but depends on if AutoEndTasks is specified or not.

The AutoEndTasks value determines whether these non-responding processes get forced closed automatically or not to finish signing out, restarting, or shutting down Windows.

The WaitToKillAppTimeout value determines how long the system waits for user processes to end after the user attempts to sign out, restart, or shut down Windows. If the value of AutoEndTasks has been turned on, then the system ends the process automatically.

I understand this. My problem is that HungAppTimeout is claimed to do the exact same thing.

Technet is not much help either: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../cc978624.aspx
It claims contradictory things. For WaitToKillAppTimeout it claims that it's affected byAutoEndTasks. For AutoEndTasks it claims that it affects HungAppTimeout and. WaitToKillAppTimeout is not mentioned...

I'd set both to what you wanted to cover all bases.

hi, sorry to open an old thread but this is the only one i seemed to have found useful.

I just wanted to know if the AutoEndTasks registry key can be used on Windows Server 2008 R2 and does the OS require a restart for the setting to become effective once its been added?
